It’s lucky that women don’t get syphilis. That means they don’t need mandatory screening.

Unlike HIV, syphilis is easily transmitted by normal intercourse between men and women. The high prevalence among homosexuals is more indicative of promiscuity than sodomy.

Although - I wonder now why the Tuskegee study followed men rather than women. Women are more likely to take an interest in their own health, comply with medical personnel, and less likely to move and leave the study area. 25% of men in the study area tested positive for syphilis exposure - what about the women?
