There is a real chance that our two-party system is about to disintegrate into four parties, or more.
Trump has lit the fuse on a right-leaning populist party. Bernie has established the base of a Euro-style Socialist Democratic one.
Where that takes us is an interesting question, as the structure of Congress is wholly unsuited to a multiparty system.
I really don’t think there will be a GOP/Trump split, if for no other reason nobody wants to lead such a movement. Exhibit A is Bill Kristol’s drafting an unknown columnist to lead that movement. The GOP saw what Trump did to Jeb...and nobody wants to go through that.
Now on the left - Bernie might just go all the way, and splinter the rats. One can dream...
Now, as far as congress goes. We’ve already got a few ‘independents’ in there - and they seem to always caucus with the rats. Too much back scratching to not hitch a wagon to one of the major parties. I don’t think that would change, unless a significant number of splinter party members were elected.
