Netanyahu: Deepening ties with Russia important for Israel’s security

The deepening ties between Israel and Russia are important for the country’s security, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday as he addressed a Jerusalem Day ceremony on the eve of his Monday departure to Moscow.

On Tuesday he will hold his fourth face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in less than a year to strengthen military cooperation between the two countries and to celebrate 25 years of diplomatic relations.

On the day that marks the unification of Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War, Netanyahu could not help but reflect on what an enormous difference time makes in the relationships between nations.

In any case, Jews continue to flee Russia, as they have for many years. I have worked with quite a few in the IT area.

True, they flee for economic opportunity or lately, Liberal leftist ideology as well.

It's important to note the ease with which Russians and Israelis move between the nations in both directions, for any purpose, the fact that Russia has been paying the pensions and annuities of Russian emigres across the border to them in Israel, and the current agreement to include pensions granted under the Soviet era.

These people are far from persecuted in Russia unless they advocate faggot pedophiles in children' schools, or some such.

It is never wise to make a deal with the devil.

Yes, Bibi should watch his step with Obama.

Agreed but this statement:

They commenced current Syrian operations more of necessity than desire.

...is not all true.

Russia needed to “help” Syria in order to establish a foothold (and at least 2 big bases) in Syria.

She also needed a proving grounds for all her weapons system developed since 1980.

She has succeeded in both.

Just as Nazi Germany needed Spain in 1936 to test out her weapons of war, so too, Putin needs Syria to do the same.

Actually I met a couple of people at my last job who lived in fear in Russia because of being Jewish. No idea how widespread this is.

Russia needed to “help” Syria in order to establish a foothold (and at least 2 big bases) in Syria.

Well, that is true, but must be examined over a considerably longer timeline than we are considering here. Please let me expand.

After WWII Soviet Russia did intend to acquire warm water ports in both the Med (Syria) and the Persian Gulf (Iran) by whatever means necessary. To this end Communist operatives subverted the Western friendly Iranian Monarchy, and attempted largely unsuccessful (due to British divide and control foresight) similar operations in the Middle East.

The Muslim Brotherhood was plaguing Syria (and Egypt), and The US did not undermine the strong responses of Assad senior or the Egyptian Presidents and Military.

The US (CIA) understanding the importance of landlocking warm water Soviet Russia and maintaining facilities bordering on the Soviet Union, implemented the reinstatement of the Iranian Monarchy, and attracted Turkey with economic perks and commerce with Western Europe and the US.

Soviet Russia was frustrated most places except Syria who was getting little help against the Muslim Brotherhood, and at the dawn of the 70's Soviet Russia and Syria struck an agreement to build Soviet naval bases in Syria.

By 1978, Carter's failure to support the anti Communist Shah of Iran caused the Communists to retake control of the government. They lasted two weeks but the Islamic terrorists that took over immediately agreed to Soviet Russian aid and Soviet naval bases.

These are the Russian bases that make your statement true, and they were effectively complete and fully operational by 1985, under the USSR and Soviet Russian military joint operations with the host nations.

I would note that the Soviet political direction and the Soviet military charge and goals are more than significantly different than those of the Russian Federation and Military.

Now let's move forward to the 1990's and the Newly formed Russian Federation, and that management of Russian bases on foreign soil. It would be fair to say that the Russians work hard to keep them, but there is little expansion and moderate upgrading, until the destabilizing disaster of Obama's presidency and his "Arab Spring".

It would be reasonable to consider the expansion of other nations foreign soil bases to those of the Russian Federation for an overall picture, as well.

The considerable time lag between when Russia acquired these operational bases and when they used them in military combat speaks to more necessity than desire.

She also needed a proving grounds for all her weapons system developed since 1980.

It is true that Russia tested real world performance of her new weapons, but was it even possible to NOT test them, and was it actually Russia that provided the "proving ground" or was it those that empowered ISIS and let them loose in the Middle East?

Your analysis is quite compelling. The CCCP has had a base at Latakia for decades, correct?

The airbase at Latakia has quite large and well built runways fully capable of servicing all modern jet aircraft, and much of that was constructed during the Soviet Russian support of Syria, and Russian support only broken when they could not support anyone during the fall of the Soviet Union and the subsequent Russian civil disturbance and political transition to the Russian Federation.

Thereafter, Russia resumed support of Syria and the Latakia airbase was part of that support. The original size and construction of that airbase speaks to an intent of having a major high capacity Russian airbase in Syria.

If ordinary news reports are true, the airbase was only lightly used and had minimal support facilities until recently, when Russia did a major upgrade of all facilities at the Latakia airbase.

Russia now refers to the base by the name Khmeimim Air Base, and it is a small Russian city, for the support and comfort of the Russians deployed there.

Interestingly, Russia has denied operations to make useable a smaller airfield near Qamishli Syria, while the US has denied occupying Rmeilan Air Base in the Syrian Kurdish region near Syria's Iraqi and Turkish borders. Both MAY be to fly support for the Kurds, but Joint US-Russian support for Kurds is my speculation based on what may have been joint support for Kurds in Iraq.
