True story: After that tragic church bombing in Alabama (1963) killed those four little girls, J. Edgar Hoover made it a priority to get rid of the KKK once and for all. By the mid 1970s, they were mostly gone, but so was J. Edgar and like all government programs, FBI infiltration had taken on a life of its own.
Shortly after Reagan was elected, an FBI agent who I know from a former life, told me that the KKK was on life support and the only thing keeping them clinging on was the dues paid by the FBI infiltrators.
Someone in the agency finally worked up the courage to pronounce the KKK dead by 1984 and suggest the infiltration program be dropped. There was such an outcry in the media,. however, that the proposal was withdrawn. The Clinton administration finally and very quietly dropped the wasteful program because they knew a Democrat administration wouldn't promote a media outcry. The were right.
Of course, this didn't kill off all the tiny offshoots of the KKK and, so far as we know, some remnant of the infiltration program is still alive, some four decades or so after J. Edgar Hoover's stated goal of making the KKK comatose was achieved.
