American Muslims remember Muhammad Ali as hero for their faith

The death of boxing great Muhammad Ali cost American Muslims perhaps their greatest hero, a goodwill ambassador for Islam in a country where their minority faith is widely misunderstand and mistrusted.

"We thank God for him," Talib Shareef, president and imam of the Masjid Muhammad mosque in Washington, told a gathering of Muslim leaders who honored Ali in Washington on Saturday, a day after he died in a Phoenix hospital at age 74. "America should thank God for him. He was an American hero."

From the turmoil of civil rights and black Muslim movements of the 1960s to the darkest days after Sept. 11, 2001, Ali was a hero that U.S. Muslims could share with part of the American mainstream.

Muslims remembered Ali for many familiar reasons, hailing him as a champion of social justice, a lifelong supporter of charitable works and an opponent of the U.S. war in Vietnam.

Moreover, they said, he was a Muslim that a largely Christian country came to admire, even if Ali shocked and scared much of U.S. society after he joined the Nation of Islam and changed his name from Cassius Clay in 1964.

"When we look at the history of the African-American community, one important factor in popularizing Islam in America is Muhammad Ali," Warith Deen Mohammed II, son of the former Nation of Islam leader, said in a statement.

With some 3.3 million adherents in the United States, Muslims make up about 1 percent of the population, largely immigrants and African-Americans who have embraced the religion.

Although they have integrated into society better than some of their brethren in Europe, American Muslims face hardships even as the United State grows demographically less white and less Christian.

The Nation of Islam isn't islamic, but it's still a good point.

I remember in 1971. I was in Vietnam and Ali’s draft dodger conviction was changed to allow “conscientious objection”.
One of the guys serving with me, said Ali was a coward. My buddy’s brother got drafted into the Army and was killed the year before. My buddy was black.

Yes good ! And that selfish Cassius / Muhammad is being used as a tool by muslims and DHIMMYrats to impose the settlement and the power / threat of iSSlam in your country ....

In the beginning , when they are a minority , they keep whining and claiming when equal rights and when they are bigger they are more and more violents ....

They are the allies of the libtard-rats everywhere to destroy civilized countries

Islam, a PHONY religion with a PHONY god and a PHONY prophet. What more could you want from a religion?

Beheadings, rapes, child molestations, world conquest goals, complete subjugation of women, pedophilia, honor killings, female disfigurement (acid in the face, cutting off noses and female genitalia), ..... shall I continue describing the religion of peace? ......... Drowning living conscious Christians in cages, burning living conscious Christians in cages and coffins and hanging people over fire pits (Human Bar-B-Q).

Don’t be fooled, there are no “moderate Muslims”. The Islamists are following the Koran and their other scriptures. The self-deluded, so-called moderate Muslims, are NOT. Hence, they are FAKE Muslims or non-Muslims.

The Islamic religion (Muslims) is a PLAGUE on the world. It is a religion of EVIL (Satan). Who could deny this? We can not condone ANY part of it.

Like I have said before, I will believe there are “moderate” Muslims when they are marching in the streets, by the THOUSANDS, condemning the so-called “radical” Muslims. I am NOT holding my breath.

I wonder if Reuters will do a puff piece on Ali’s view of inter-racial marriage? (Hint: he was strongly against it.) Or fondly quote him calling Joe Frazier an ugly gorilla of a black man?

American Black Muslims are not really Islamic in the way Sunnis or Shias are. They are more analogous to the way Mormons are called Christians; thy have their own beliefs and practices.

Muhammad Ali was a good boxer, but pretty much garbage in every other facet of his life. Unfortunately, too many people, being good at just one thing can cover up a multitude of other sins. Bill Clinton and Bill Cosby come to mind, one can give good speeches and one is a good comic, and that was enough for most people to ignore the fact that they are also rapists and all-around pond scum as human beings.

Cassius Clay was a draft dodger !!!

Strictly speaking, no he wasn't. He was a draft resister. Ali did not take steps to avoid conscription, as many others did. He did not flee the country to avoid the draft, as many did. Ali stayed, refused conscription, and accepted the consequences. Agree or disagree with his position, he didn't dodge anything.

Clay was a talented athlete... He was also an arsehole.

No hero at any level in my book.

Really? Just as any sports fans associate/empathize with their athlete/team of choice, it's not odd that Muslims would look up to him as a source of pride. I haven't researched but haven't heard any credible info that he "was a very bad person". Never heard him call for jihad or murdering innocents because he disagreed with them.

Nothing like crapping on the graves of the dead to make some feel good.

However he was a giant arse.

Perhaps. If history teaches us one thing it's that one person's hero is quite often another person's giant arse. But giant arse or not, Ali did take his stand and accepted the consequences. A lot of people wouldn't do that.

Yes yes, and he also called Joe Frazier an Uncle Tom.... The same guy who supported him publicly and financially while he “stood up for his beliefs”... among other things while playing his little schtick... Folks want to salute a jackass they are free to, Clay wont be the first or last idiot idolized by some.

He had no loyalty but to himself and was a classless arse.

Very really. No honor, not even in death...not for him because of what he stood for and his behavior.
