I admired his boxing as a kid. I have to say, however, that he was a Muslim braggart - and I am sorry that he is in the place where he is now.

20 years or so ago I nearly bumped into him while scurrying between flights at O’Hare airport. He was just sort of gazing into space, like he wasn’t all there.

Thanks for the post. I always tried to separate politics from sports until liberals started to push their religion on broadcasts, and I always kept Ali’s politics/religion separate from his brilliant athletic performances. Hunting, fishing, and watching sports and boxing were what I remember the most about being with my Dad, and Ali sure gave us a lot to talk about.

As far as his religion is concerned, he disparaged the extremists and provided one of the few healthy role models that some inner city black kids could emulate. He wasn’t a perfect man, as are some who have posted negatively on this thread, but all in all he was a good man. He was also one of two heroes to an Army brat-later-paratrooper son of a paratrooper. RIP Muhammad Ali.

Let’s, a conscientious objector, who fights and makes millions. To me, that is nothing but a stinking liar.

A mooselimb convert. Frankly, I see nothing redeeming in this man’s achievements in life.

The fact that he was an athlete - that is a big fat nothing burger. A man is defined by his character, principles and what he believes in, not his physical or mental capabilities.

Clay/Ali really put the sport of boxing into the forefront of our consciousness.
He was an excellent marketer, showman and boxer, promoting himself and the sport all at the same time.

Having said that, any Christian African American who slithered over to the likes of the Muslim Brotherhood, Elijah Muhammad and Louis Farakhan and was a draft dodger, rabble rouser and generally A-hole is and remains a traitor and A-hole.

After announcing his retirement from the ring in 1974, Ali lost no time in throwing right hooks at Zionism and embracing the Palestinian cause. Talking to reporters in Beirut, Lebanon, at the start of a tour of the Middle East, Ali said that “the United States is the stronghold of Zionism and imperialism.” On a subsequent visit to two Palestinian refugee camps in southern Lebanon, the former heavyweight boxing champion was quoted by a news agency as saying: “In my name and the name of all Muslims in America, I declare support for the Palestinian struggle to liberate their homeland and oust the Zionist invaders.”

It is my opinion that he took that belief to his death bed.

I will not grieve for such a person...his other accomplishments are diminished greatly those statement.

To hell with him.

***and I am sorry that he is in the place where he is now. ***

I’ve read that the dead from Phoenix often return to pick up their blankets as they consider hell too cold for them. (OLD joke).

His name change is interesting. It was a family name which was taken from an abolitionist who had freed his own slaves. His father had the same name. Then Cassius changed it to the name of a man who was a slave owner and slave trader when he took the name Muhammed. That was the work of a fool.

Ali debased our culture and made it popular to be an arrogant Clymer. He made Islam more acceptable in certain quarters. He did a lot of damage to the black community with these acts. And he was a coward. He would fight for his own self-interest, but not for the freedom of others. Every single punch he threw and every victory he had in the ring was as nothing compared to the deeds of those who went and fought in his place.

It is a sign of a sick culture that he is so lionized. And he played a major role in making that culture sick.

He was a decent boxer but not the best. He did get the best media promotionals, I will give him that. I did agree with his views on interracial marriage. He was a muslim and that fact puts him low on the list of the civilized.
