Muhammad Ali, the silver-tongued boxer and civil rights champion who famously proclaimed himself "The Greatest" and then spent a lifetime living up to the billing, is dead.
Ali died Friday at a Phoenix-area hospital, where he had spent the past few days being treated for respiratory complications, a family spokesman confirmed to NBC News. He was 74.
After a 32-year battle with Parkinson's disease, Muhammad Ali has passed away at the age of 74. The three-time World Heavyweight Champion boxer died this evening," Bob Gunnell, a family spokesman, told NBC News.
I admired his boxing as a kid. I have to say, however, that he was a Muslim braggart - and I am sorry that he is in the place where he is now.
Newbie, that is an excellent post and visual, thank you.
RIP
One of the first name changing Muslim’s I became familiar with. Cassius Clay will be his name to me, if I spelled it correctly.
The older I get, the more aware I become of how history develops and just exactly what makes up history
If he dd,in fact, support Reagan that would be a big plus on his slate...IMO.That’s all I’ll say for now.
Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr.
And "me too." I was at my grandparents' house on Long Island, it must have been summertime, the "summer of the World's Fair." The name change came on the news. I noticed it, that particular news piece. I wondered about it. For reasons unknown to me (certainly at the time), that news item made an impression as being an odd thing for a person to do.
Your post made me curious.
From http://www.nytimes.com/1984/10/03/us/campaign-notes-muhammad-ali-switches-his-support-to-reagan.html:
Asked to elaborate on his endorsement of Mr. Reagan, Mr. Ali told reporters, ‘’He’s keeping God in schools and that’s enough.’’
(He switched his support from Jesse Jackson)
I saw Norton break his jaw. Remarkable that he kept on his feet and ‘went the distance’.
If knocking brains around in football injures brains for life, then intentionally beating brains in boxing should result in some obviously impaired senior boxers.
Ali was a good boxer in his day. It made him rich and totally incapable of enjoying it
Ironic that we refer to him using an adjective that Muslims reserve for Allah.
I watched him live at the Capital Center Md pummel somebody. Now both are gone.
Useless piece of garbage. Vietnam is where the men were, while dimwits like Ali supported the enemy.
“On June 28 of that same year, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned his conviction for evading the draft.” The SCOTUS decision to overturn his conviction was 8-0.
“Black Superman (Muhammad Ali)” by Johnny Wakelin hit #7 in UK and #21 in US in ‘75. Ali disliked the ska-pop tune.
