ANN ARBOR, MI — If you don't bring your own reusable bags when you go grocery shopping, it could cost you.
Washtenaw County commissioners voted 6-2 Wednesday night to approve a new carryout bag ordinance that imposes a 10-cent fee on consumers for every disposable bag they receive at retail grocery stores in the county.
That includes both paper and plastic.
The ordinance is intended to eliminate unnecessary waste and incentivize people to be more environmentally conscious.
However, there's pending state legislation that could take away the county's ability to impose such regulations.
Senate Bill 853 passed through the state Senate on May 10 and awaits approval from the state House.
The county plans to hold off on actively enforcing the new ordinance until Earth Day next year, which is April 22, 2017.
That gives retail grocery stores and consumers time to prepare for the implementation of the regulations.
The ordinance was opposed by Commissioners Dan Smith, R-Northfield Township, and Ronnie Peterson, D-Ypsilanti.
Ruth Ann Jamnick was absent.

They did this to us in San Jose. It really was not so bad. We just kept a few re-usable bags in the car. I would have preferred that the stores let the market place decide the issue but all in all it was OK.

Since we are on the subject of plastic bags,I saw on the local Pittsburgh news this morning that a group of ladies in a church are using plastic store bags and knitting mats out of them. The looked really nice and they are using them for laying on the ground for a blanket or sleeping bag on top. Great Idea!
Actually, they are $.023 each, buying them 1000 at a time from an online source (U-Line)
When a store buys them a million at a time, I suspect the price will decline precipitously.
This is just more eco-commie nonsense. Take a walk through the woods sometime. You’ll see lots of decaying plastic bags. Yes, they decay, down to nothing.
Plus, if most families are like mine, they tend to get re-used for other purposes.
Yes I tend not to shop in counties that do not include something to carry the products out of the store. So far my very low income and unemployed county still gives bags for free, some counties around us don’t. I used to shop outside my county. Now I don’t and I use the inter-web to order stuff delivered.
I re-use the plastic bags - every time I scoop the litter boxes. Then it all goes in the weekly trash bag, which isn’t free either. Seems like the only free thing in this state is SHIT.
