Behind Mitt Romney’s Increasingly Lonely Challenge to Donald Trump

Mitt Romney’s advisers begged him not to go to war with...Trump. After he decided to go ahead, Mr. Trump dismissed him as “lightweight” and “failed candidate.” This week, Newt Gingrich called him “pathetic.”

Mr. Romney, sticking to his guns, has become a rare figure in American history—a former presidential nominee openly defying the man succeeding him as his party’s standard-bearer.

Sitting at his home on the Pacific Ocean last week, Mr. Romney reflected on the waves he created by attacking Mr. Trump, how his family helped persuade him it was the right thing to do, and how he increasingly finds himself a voice in the wilderness.

“Friends warned me, ‘Don’t speak out, stay out of the fray,’ because criticizing Mr. Trump will only help him by giving him someone else to attack,” Mr. Romney said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal—the first time the 2012 GOP nominee discussed in depth his reasons for going after Mr. Trump.

“They were right. I became his next target, and the incoming attacks have been constant and brutal.” He said he had no illusions he would alter Mr. Trump’s progress toward the nomination or spark a meaningful independent candidacy.

His motivation: “I wanted my grandkids to see that I simply couldn’t ignore what Mr. Trump was saying and doing, which revealed a character and temperament unfit for the leader of the free world.”

Today, the GOP anti-Trump chorus is dwindling, leaving Mr. Romney among the few making the case publicly.

Mr. Trump, in an interview on Wednesday, said of Mr. Romney: “Once a choker, always a choker. I’ve got a store worth more than he is.” He said Mr. Romney’s attack “has nothing to do with his country. It has to do with me. I’m the one who forced him out”...

Also, the way Trump fights and wins exposes Mitt for the sissy he is. Mitt knows he will go down in history as the man who got beaten by lard ass Candy Crowley.

It's just killing him.

Somehow I can't understand people who feel they can criticize others yet believe they won't receive back in kind.

Mr Romney YOU gave us a second term of Barack Obama. YOU did that to America. How dare you criticize any other candidates. YOUR failure is responsible for much of the harm done to our Country. I suggest you shut up and go away.

Mitt is just following his father’s lead after the popular (in MI) George W. Romney fought to stop Goldwater in 1964.

You nailed it. Misplaced pride. He felt all his life he “deserved” the limelight, and now he can’t let it go. For all his vast personal fortune, he is unable to truly enjoy it, because his ambition blinds him.

So now his grand kids will see him as an open borders guy! And since they’ll live their lives in gated communities with country club access, armed guards and sheltered lives, it won’t bother them a bit.

I could have respected what he’s doing...except that Obama and Hillary have said and done way, way worse things, and Mittens said nothing and did nothing.

Also, when he ran for President, he was vicious to conservatives in the primary, and burried them under his pile of money. While disappointed that a conservative didn’t win the nomination we thought he at least he showed himself to be a fighter. But once he got to the general election he acted like Bambi against Obama!

So I have absolutely no respect for him.

Mittens simply cannot understand the fact that “the little people” have finally awakened to the fact that the GOP was only there to ensure the wealth of those who joined the GOPe crowd. He didn’t understand that the working class had enough of being raped of their money simply to feed the wealth of the wealthy who obtained their wealth though pandering to the GOPe and the benefits thereof...like Romney.

Isn’t it a wonder that only very rich people are normally the selectees of the GOPe to run for any high office????

I wonder how Romney would have turned out if he was a poor boy like myself and started working at a grocery store when I was 9 and later mowed yards, had a paper route, worked in the oilfield, was forced to join the Service due to being poor and not having a daddy to influence the draft. (You gotta remember, back then the corrupt draft board was comprised of locals of “high caliber”...if you know what I mean.)

He simply can’t get over the fact that he had his political head served on a server when he actually tried something on his own...getting elected, and now this Trump upstart has “upset the apple cart” for the GOPe.

I had read that actually it was Bush and his 100 million dollar PAC that Romney deferred to.

So, at least we can give Jeb a Atta boy for keeping the Bishop sidelined. May have been a more formidable opponent to Trump early.

“Romney created Candidate Trump.”

Overstates things a lot. The MSM created an opening for Trumps buffoonery by ignoring and excusing Clinton’s bad behavior. Bush and the RNC apparatus refused to defend themselves from near continuous attack from the leftists with press passes, then McCain raised the ante by attacking anyone who tried to show that Obama was unqualified.

“Romney led the party down a path that rejected everything republican voters believe in. In response, republican voters rejected every candidate who followed Romney. Mitt has often been dismissed as irrelevant, but the truth is worse. Mitt is the problem.”

Mitt was a symptom of the problem more than the problem himself. He was the second nominee in a row that ran against major planks of the Republican Party platform. I also do not think he was a member of the RNC committee that wrote the, much celebrated by the MSM, campaign autopsy after He lost. The RNC will have troubles untill they accept that Republican Voters have dispute their report on the causes of their loss in 2012, and reject the proposed solutions.

Trumps written position papers seem to me to be largely mainstream republican positions, and those where he differs from the RNC are all positions supported by over 60% of voters.

Mitt Romney is a douchebag

To say Mitt Romney is an ungrateful b&$t*r&, would be un understatement.

Donald Trump Has Given Millions To Pro-Romney SuperPACs And His Whole Family Is Cutting Checks To Mitt's Campaign

Snips from 2012:

According to Cohen, Trump has donated "millions" to SuperPACs which support the Romney campaign. He wouldn't say which ones, and since disclosure requirements for SuperPACs are sketchy, we may not find out.

Character. Temperament. Hmmm...translation, Trump is too....manly. Rare these days. And he's "Gringo-centric". as well. Harms the sensibilities of the modern wo-men of the GOPe. I guess.

Wth does Gov Romney think he’s up to? He managed to lose or throw an ection that any dodo with a little fire in his belly would have won in a walk. Even obammy said he had started packing to leave the WH. And now just what dies he think he could win by screwing around like this? A second capitulation to -— or enabling of -a D party win ? What is it with these gop-e types that they keep working to elect the extreme leftist D’s??
