How Microsoft's tricky new Windows 10 pop-up deceives you into upgrading
PCWorld, ^ | 5/23/2016 | Brad Chacos

Microsoft's new trick to coax users into upgrading to Windows 10 relies on changing behaviors the pop-up's instilled since December.

This morning, the unthinkable happened: My wife, an avowed PC user who long ago swore to never touch an Apple device, started shopping around for a Mac Mini. And it’s all thanks to Windows 10. Or rather, the nasty new way that Microsoft’s tricking Windows 7 and 8 users into automatically updating to Windows 10.

...

The annoying “Get Windows 10” pop-up began using deceiving malware-like tactics months ago, but it recently received an overhaul that seems purposefully designed to confuse users who have been wearily slogging through the nagging for half a year now.

That nasty change trick resulted in my wife’s beloved Windows 7 PC being sneakily upgraded to Windows 10 this morning. Sure, she has 30 days to roll it back to Windows 7, but she feels so betrayed—like Microsoft forcibly removed her control over her own PC.

...

here’s the icky part: The redesigned GWX pop-up now treats exiting the window as consent for the Windows 10 upgrade.

So after more than half a year of teaching people that the only way to say “no thanks” to Windows 10 is to exit the GWX application—and refusing to allow users to disable the pop-up in any obvious manner, so they had to press that X over and over again during those six months to the point that most people probably just click it without reading now—Microsoft just made it so that very behavior accepts the Windows 10 upgrade instead, rather than canceling it.

That’s gross.

Woke up this Saturday, 21 May 16 and my wife asked me, "Did you upgrade to Windows 10?"

Me: NOPE. Why?

Wife: Go look at your computer....you've successfully upgraded to WIndows 10.

Sigh...left negative feedback about the upgrade: "FORCED UPGRADES without consent is unethical. My next PC will be a MAC."

It isn’t about how good windows 10 is or isn’t. It’s about them forcing people into it. If you are a rapist, it doesn’t matter how good the “sex” is.

I get it. It’s frustrating.

But that is the way to go. You have a legitimate copy and there is info associated with your Windows and Office programs that confirms it even without the original install codes.

I walked away from my computer for a few minutes, and when I came back Windows 10 was being installed.

Same here
Came back from taking a shower and it was loading

Personally I don't like it

I haven’t tried this but:

To access this, open the Start menu and select Settings. Click the “Update & security” icon and select “Recovery.” You should see a “Go back to Windows 7” or “Go back to Windows 8.1” option. Click the Get started button to get rid of your Windows 10 install and restore your previous Windows install.

The errors I get are both for NVM and 16 bit DOS support.

I even get errors with Windows 10 32 bit.

My build of the ARJ compression program works with Windows 8.1.

Same thing. It messed me up big time. A bunch of my google earth places were lost (for work), c CAD program I use for work is crap - with hours of work lost, etc. I thought I had recovered enough to get by, but just lost that again.

I was looking on google last night that within 30 days of the upgrade it is pretty simple to go back to 7 or 8.1 or whatever. I’ll do that this afternoon.

In the last quarter the Google Chromebook outsold MACS. In October, the Google Chromebooks will be able to run all of the 1,000,000 android apps in the Google Play Store.

People who continue to use PC’s with all the ongoing chicanery in whicl MS indulges, remind me of people who continue to try to maintain older British cars!
I think they are like people who continue to maintain that Lyin” Ted is a “principled conservative.”

After it’s installed, it asks you to agree to the terms and conditions. If you click “don’t agree”, it undoes the install, putting everything back the way it was.

It does keep trying, though, so I followed the directions here to stop it: http://winsupersite.com/windows-10/how-stop-windows-10-upgrade-downloading-your-system

Use Linux as the host assuming all of your hardware can be made to work with Linux. Then VirtualBox for all of your Windows versions and software spps for same. It may take some time upfront, but with use of clones, restore is very fsst and effective. Works fine on 6+yr old machine with some origional power -quad processor.

Like with so many things, it’s not the thing itself that’s the problem. It’s the forcing.

If Microsoft had presented the advantages and given me a choice, I may or may not have decided to upgrade. But the fact that they are trying to force the upgrade without my consent, means that they believe I shouldn’t be allowed to decide what happens with my own property.

In my opinion, that is crossing a VERY serious line!

it happened to my Dads machine at his small business. We were delaying upgrading to 10 as long as possible to make sure it worked with the Quickbooks version he was running. One morning a week or so ago bang, we had 10 that installed sometime in the middle of the night. So much for having a choice.

You nailed it.

There is no worse malware than Microsoft.

(Windows 7 user—sticking with it until my machine dies—or I die—whichever happens first.) :-)

I’d take out the word “date” in that description, but rape is a good analogy. MS is trying to force it, even on those who were awake and fighting and the time.

Here is a funny Windows 10 popup video.

A reporter was giving a live weather report on TV recently when the weather computer popped up, on air, a notice that the Windows 10 upgrade was ready:

MICROSOFT WINDOWS 10 Update Interrupts Weather
