The law is still on the books.

Yeah, but the books have been sold.

Chicago ‘68 was cops vs. crazies outside the convention.

What defeated Hubert Humphrey was the assassination of Robert Kennedy. Poor ol’ HH was seen as a continuation of LBJ & the Vietnam war. RFK had promised change.

FWIW, nobody in American history lusted for the Presidency more than Lyndon Johnson. Read Robert A. Caro on LBJ; he was consumed with ambition for high office. When it fell into his hands with the JFK assassination, Johnson couldn’t believe his own luck.

Yet, five years later, only 60 & eligible for a second term, Lyndon Johnson bailed & headed back to the LBJ Ranch. He died four years later.

Like you, I’ll watch this with a grim satisfaction and the sort of horrible fascination usually reserved for the sort of vehicular accidents that leave body parts strewn about

This is going to be better than ‘68.

Oh there will be rioting outside the convention in Cleveland.
How could the left not riot?

Philadelphia had lots of problems with anarchists during the last Republican Convention there. Several Pennsyvania State Troopers that I knew were detailed there to beef up security. Things got pretty dicey on the streets.

Philadelphia with it’s narrow alleys in between the main arteries is tailor made for trouble.

Indeed, that is why, for example, in Cambodia things like being too smart or too happy were offences punishable by beatings or even death under Pol Pot.

And why roughly 80% of the original Bolsheviks died at the hands of their comrades.

People like Bernie Sanders's followers imagine they'll all be part of the nomenklatura, living high on the socialist hog, instead of the masses fighting over the last package of disposable diapers in an empty Venezuelan market.

No doubt. Cleveland is doing the same thing, for the bar district adjacent to the convention site. Open containers and sales till 4 AM.

The contrast between a Republican convention designed and hosted by Trump vs a Democrat convention designed by by Debbie Washerwoman will be mind blowing.

Trumps convention will be a world class star studded gala, a banquet, a party, a celebration of American greatness and optimism, with Trump visible and hosting all 4 days.

The dem convention will be 3 days of freak show/riots with Hillary showing up the 4th day looking like a weak out of shape referee trying to to control a professional wrestling match with chairs and beer cups flying!

They should fog the protest areas with pot smoke. Kind of like smoking bees to pacify them:)

The convention is down where the stadiums are. Not much to destroy, not a friendly neighborhood to outsiders. The Philly perimeter does have to be secured on all four sides. A major issue will be the freeway just to the east. If the rioters wanted to do one of their freeway blockage ops and associated mayhem, they are a few hundred yards from the venue. If the protestors want to screw with convention goers at their hotels downtown, things might get a bit dicey.

Cleveland is a slightly different deal. The IX center is located at the airport, so it is locked down on three sides by airport, with one road access. The issue will be with convention goers staying downtown.

The problems in Philly will, as you say, be at the downtown hotels. They may try to sneak people onto the convention floor to try and draw attention to what’s going on outside the hall.

Do you remember the chants they did in Chicago in 1968?   ("The whole world is watching!")

For an interesting look at the 1968 Chicago convention, watch some of these youtube videos in this youtube list:

"1968 Democratic Convention part 1" (and following video clips in youtube group list)

(Just be prepared to see interviews with people from all sides back then, including American terrorist Bill Ayers, and various others who were involved back then.)

For some other quick looks from back then, you might want to take a look at these video clips too.

"1968 Chicago Police vs Protesters"

"Chicago Convention The Whole World is Watching 1968"

(To hear that "Whole World's Watching" chant a little better, listen to the beginning of the following youtube video clip.)

"Thw Whole World Is Watching" Chant
