We went once as a family. Got a three day pass. Had enough after 2 days.
Dude, I’m with you. Disney, while maybe a drag for us adults, is so very special for the young’uns. It’s a special place. For those who don’t care for it - don’t go there. Just sayin’.
That said- I could do without all the ‘fairies’ going there for their gay weddings. But to their credit, they left us alone and kept to themselves.
Who woulda guessed it? Decisions have consequences.

“went once because my spouse was there for business. I hated every minute of Disney and our kids didnt care for it either. Waste of time and money.”
Went there for a conference with my boss. Real Brooklyn Italian. All the way down to Florida he yelled at me. We got to the hotel he was deranged from the flight and train ride. I had a presentation and needed sleep. Would up working till 3 am.
Don’t remember how long I slept but the knock on my door said I was up for the day. My boss is at the door, with ears on telling me to hurry so we can get to the park opening and sit in front for the parade. He wanted to see Snow White. On my day off, preparing for a presentation, I wound up riding tea cups, going on its a small world countless times and had to wait in line for space mountain for 3 hours. He wouldn’t spring for the express line because he didn’t want others to feel cheated.
At that point I knew he was off his meds.
I dislike amusement parks in general. We took our kids to Disney once, that was enough. Crowds, lines, heat, non-stop activities. It was exhausting. When the kids wanted to go to an amusement park after that I took them to a small local one where they could ride and I could relax. We took them to Europe for several weeks, that is the vacation they remember. Probably spent less than the same time at Disney and it had more value.
In Middle school, son was mad when he found out there were places like Knoebel’s and Six Flags. Told him when he grows up he can take his kids.
I remember when admission to Disney was $17.00.
I wish it was that simple. One of my college roommates and best friends is a cast member as Disney World. Both his wife and he work as cast members in shows and parades, and the stories they'll tell you would make your hair curl. There's a quote in the article that sums it up perfectly:
One employee said: 'I work at Disney World and being around children and their parents all day every day has taught me how not to raise my children.'
Orlando is a concrete jungle, and heat indices in the summer can soar over 100F. Cast members in full makeup or suits entertaining bratty little shits can be an absolute nightmare. However, they love their jobs and love working for Disney, but they love their downtime and are the nicest people you've ever met otherwise. They also espouse generous tipping for retail and service people as a matter of course.
Me and my son are the lone luckiest Disney visitors ever. We had the great good fortune to of being the only tourists at the entire park one Sunday due to that horrendous string of hurricanes in 2004. We were the only people too stupid to cancel. At the last minute the hurricane veered sharply west into the Gulf. It was too sudden for people to change their travel plans.
We did not have short waits for rides, we had no waits at all. As fast as we could run through the deserted cattle chutes we just got on again, usually in the same ride car that we just got out of. For a 6 YO it was paradise.
That's a good story. I had a similar experience. I was at the Terra Cotta warriors on a trip to China in 2003. It was the height of the SARS panic. Chinese were told not to travel, and many large cities banned people who had returned from the countryside from going to work, telling them to stay home. As Foreigners, we were pretty much free to do as we pleased.
Chinese tourist attractions are usually mobbed with people. This time, 2 colleagues and I were literally the only people in the entire park, with the entire staff there to explain, give us tours, etc...
When it is spoken about a baby (for instance, one that has just got a 'boo-boo' or some such thing), then it can be taken literally. Of course, the vocal inflection in such cases makes it easy to understand.
When it's sarcastic, you know it.
Disneyland in California does one night a year for police and firefighters. They close the park and run everyone out at about 4 pm and then at 5 start letting the firefighters and police families in. Must show fire or police ID. Open til midnight. We used to take our daughter every year. Not one line anywhere. Like you said, get off circle back through the stalls and on again. Was great.
I worked with some Jewish people and they had one about two mothers, one of whom went to a finishing school and the other who bragged about "My son, the doctor." She was unending in all the wonderful things he did. After each sentence she paused, and the other woman would reply "F-A-S-C-I-N-A-T-I-N-G."
Finally running dry, she asked the other woman what she learned at finishing school. She replied, "Well, for one thing, we learned to say F-A-S-C-I-N-A-T-I-N-G' instead of 'Bullshit!".
A few decades ago, in my college years, I worked at Disney World over a couple of summers. Especially for a young person, it was a decent place to work and gave me a valuable insight into how to deal with the public. A pleasant manner and cheerful attitude with a joke or two at the ready did much to lift the spirits of guests — and my spirits as well. Gradually, I developed an easy touch in dealing with the guests.
“I work at Disney World and I got the park manager to let me use the Mickey costume in a show to ask my boyfriend to marry me. Im a guy.
Disneyland has a long reputation for attracting employees of that persuasion. I think it’s the on-stage nature of a lot of the jobs that’s the attraction.
My niece worked at Circle D Ranch for several years, that’s the horse part of Disneyland. She loved the job. The pay at Disney isn’t all that great, but she wouldn’t have wanted any other job at the time.
