I believe he was found to be in possession of burglary tools, or of items stolen from another student's locker, at his high school.

The media saw the name Zimmerman and assumed he was a typical white man...may have thought he was Jewish because Bob Dylan's real name is Zimmerman. They wanted to believe that he was an evil white Southern man going after an innocent black teenager because they want to believe that the South is full of white racists, so they shaped the news to fit their narrative.
