Mocked and forgotten: who will speak for the American white working class? (GOPe wants them dead)

The National Review, a conservative magazine for the Republican elite, recently unleashed an attack on the “white working class”, who they see as the core of Trump’s support.

The first essay, Father Führer, was written by the National Review’s Kevin Williamson, who used his past reporting from places such as Appalachia and the Rust Belt to dissect what he calls “downscale communities”.

He describes them as filled with welfare dependency, drug and alcohol addiction, and family anarchy – and then proclaims:

“Nothing happened to them. There wasn’t some awful disaster, There wasn’t a war or a famine or a plague or a foreign occupation. ... The truth about these dysfunctional, downscale communities is that they deserve to die. Economically, they are negative assets. Morally, they are indefensible. The white American underclass is in thrall to a vicious, selfish culture whose main products are misery and used heroin needles.”

A few days later, another columnist, David French, added:

“Simply put, [white working class] Americans are killing themselves and destroying their families at an alarming rate. No one is making them do it. The economy isn’t putting a bottle in their hand. Immigrants aren’t making them cheat on their wives or snort OxyContin.”

.....

Downscale communities are everywhere in America, not just limited to Appalachia and the Rust Belt – it’s where I have spent much of the past five years documenting poverty and addiction.

To say that “nothing happened to them” is stunningly wrong. Over the past 35 years the working class has been devalued, the result of an economic version of the Hunger Games.....The working class only had their hands. They lost and have been left to deal on their own.

This is my mini-me. I’d like to introduce you to him. He comes out of his hole every night, puts my name into the search engine, and then follows me around. He then gets his feelings hurt when he gets whacked down and goes into tirades that usually end with the word ‘snotty.’ That is because he refuses to use a vocabulary builder and doesn’t know words like ‘witty’ and ‘erudite’ to describe someone.

I know we live in tough economic times but could we not donate a penny or two to send this sad case to a remedial educator?

So....

1) Issue non-sequitur response in sentence 1
2) Attempt to disqualify the person so you do not have to respond to argument in sentence 2
3) Attempt at insult response in sentence 3.

All the while wrapping yourself in some old testament virtue signaling.

So I see you do not wish to engage, but utilize the rhetorical methods of the left to avoid responding to my comment. Very well, but the reality is your point of view is part of the poison that is killing western Christendom.

By the way: professional chap with happy wife, kids (2),attend church (sometimes) and did my stint as a reservist for King and country. Far older than 14.

The elites regard people, as such, as obsolete and act accordingly.

People require resources to eat, to have decent housing, medical care, decent education (which disappeared from "our" gummint skewels generations ago), have individual dreams and hopes and aspirations that have NOTHING to do with the insatiable greed of the elites. They have opinions and votes of their own and, unless they are kept distracted, the people may act in their own interests whether the elite manipulators like it or not. To the elites, such possibilities are nightmares.

That we do not have to meekly accept being broken and blindly doing what we are told is the underlying reality of the Trump campaign and the secret of his success. May that success continue until he vanquishes Comrade Grandma!

His task will not be an easy one even after victory. If we REALLY want our country back, we will back his play whatever our individual reservations. We will have a role to play in converting the nature of our society back to some semblance of normality, re-establishing upward mobility and job security, having institutions that reflexively support that which is good and true.

I must say, that was a well written and thought provoking response. My hat off to you and you can instruct me in scripture any time you like.... I did not disagree with anything your wrote.

I expect we are not all that far apart actually.

The only caveat I would say, is that many churches do preach a message of complementation that effectively makes women the moral head, by constantly pointing out the many errors of males, but failing to ever mention the complementary (but different) inclination of women to sin in certain directions. They essentially are saying women are morally superior to men. That is a complete inversion of the gospels, which is what I am attempting to point out.

In a good marriage the ideal is that the husband should worry and take care of the wife, while the wife worries and takes care of the husband in an easy going trust based love/affection/friendship. But the fact is for a husband to do that wholeheartedly he must know his wife will not fight him on every little battle, and when he says “this is how it will be”, she will accept the marching orders. Once he knows that his wife will be loyal, it allows him to do all those things that every wife desires. No man worth having as a husband will put up with a rebellious wife and those that do eventually find the unhappy wife losses respect and divorces them (or just has sex with a bad boy, same thing really. A wife should hold her husband up as her king and hero, which means the selection of a husband based on character is paramount.

The above is what many churches no longer preach, dominated as they are by non-masculine weak ministers who never mastered male 101 qualities. They preach weakness to men and have done more to harem the institutions they claim to be fighting for than the gay marriage fans.

You're a real POS, humble, and you need to stop stalking and harassing MM!

You're just a saggy, old, nasty little man, without a purpose nor function in life, and a complete waste of space.

A nice padded cell would be better, unless, like I, you would prefer him to be shipped off to a place as Edmond Dantes was. :-)

I think if he could find a nice, pliant Thai mail order bride, with all her shots, most of his problems would be solved.

NR is not a publication for the Republican “elite,” for starters.

That depends on what you mean by "for." I doubt the readers are all Rockefellers, but the people who put out the magazine have turned themselves into an "elite" having access to higher political circles. True, they aren't the old Republican Establishment. They are the new Establishment that (in part at least) replaced them.

And what is this mincing words about white welfare class? Do they mean what used to be called “white trash”?

Williamson mashes together the "white underclass," "the white working class" and Trump supporters into one (more or less) homogeneous group, and speaks of "the white working class’s descent into dysfunction," as though most non-college Americans were drug-addicts. He gives himself some outs, using "underclass" rather than "working class" in some key places, but it's a very snarky article without a clear and well-defined focus.

So what is the point, except to make white people afraid to vote Trump lest they begin to identify as losers? Am I just not getting it?

That's exactly the point. What makes you think you're not getting it?

What the Guardian guy doesn't take into account is that some of the writers who may have appeared in National Review, the "Sam's Club conservatives," have made points similar to Donald Trump's.
