Ex-London Mayor Boris Johnson has compared the European Unions aims to those of Adolf Hitler, arguing that the 28-nation bloc is creating a superstate that mirrors the attempt of the Nazi leader to dominate the European continent.
Johnson, the most prominent political figure arguing that Britain should leave the EU, says the past 2,000 years of European history have been dominated by doomed attempts to unify the continent and recreate the Romans golden age.
Napoleon, Hitler, various people tried this out, and it ends tragically. The EU is an attempt to do this by different methods, he was quoted by The Sunday Telegraph as saying. But fundamentally, what is lacking is the eternal problem, which is that there is no underlying loyalty to the idea of Europe. There is no single authority that anybody respects or understands. That is causing this massive democratic void.

Yes, the EU was founded in order to become a country. They were imitating the USA, in which several states united under a federal government, starting off as a loose federation which helped their common interests, and rapidly becoming an all-encompassing overwhelming central power that suppressed the identities of the states.
The EU is trying to suppress the identities of the various countries, and to create an all-powerful central government that suppresses the individual countries. It is well on the way to having achieved that, but now some countries are protesting, since their national identities are being erased.
They still have a chance. They can still get out of the EU and go back to being sovereign countries. They had better do it fast, before the jihadis multiply and take over, establishing a dictatorial theocracy.
The Russians will preemptively nuke it before it gets too powerful. No one will complain much.
"Mr. Fawlty, if the Good Lord..."
"Is mentioned once more, I shall move you closer to him."
LOL! That’s right. One of my favorite episodes. Mrs. Fawlty goes after Basil with an umbrella after she finds out O’Reilly did the construction.
Certainly the EU was never imitating the USA as it was founded. It was imitating the elements in the USA that themselves imitated the USSR and who made the UN’s charter a clone of the USSR’s constitution. The words “in accordance with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations” go back to 1957 and the Treaty of Rome.
The EU was founded to be an empire, not a “country”.
Did Johnson criticize Trump on that particular score? I thought Johnson’s gaffes were about the Muslim ban and trying to deny the existence of London’s “no-go areas”.
"Where are you going Basil?"
"Just going over to have a word with O'Reilly, dear."
I confess it took me a few viewings to get it.
Yes, I’m sure I didn’t get it on the first go ‘round.
I have it on DVD and these postings have inspired me to watch them again. My favorite episode being the Americans who invade Towers and bully Basil into making a Waldorf Salad despite the fact he’s all out of waldorfs.
What a show!
Johnson has made it clear that he loathes The Donald. He says he was mistaken for him in NYC recently and it made him sick.
I must admit, I’m not a fan of Johnson although I once was. His writings can be quite wonderful. But since he became mayor, he’s disgusted me. With his bicycle-riding, his environmentalism, and most of all his buffoonish behavior during the Olympics, have completely turned me off. And, I admit, as an anti-government type, for the life of me I can’t understand London thinking it needed a mayor when for 1,000 years it didn’t.
That's what happens when two guys have the same barber.
Which is why I disdain British opinion on the looks of Donald Trump.
