Peter Fitzgerald would have the added irony of rubbing salt in the wounds of the GOPe, who through their treachery forced him to retire after one principled term. This in turn resulted, almost certainly, in Barack Obama taking the senate seat. The more I know these people, the more I love my dog and want to see torches and pitchforks at the RNC headquarters.

Yes- the added dimension of irony- in Fitzgerald’s unseating, giving us the SOB from Indonesia, and then to have him as Trump’s VP, would be most satisfying.
I worked on his campaign as a volunteer and paid staff, but not before vetting him myself, as best I could, in January of 1998. I went all in for Fitzgerald, once I determined that he was a man beyond reproach. He did not let the people of Illinois down. That is saying something, considering how sorry the state of politics is in Illinois. Back to back governors imprisoned at the same time, from each party no less!!! GRRR!
