The original Republican Party was against slavery because it want against the principles of the Declaration of Independence that all men were created equal. That is defending a political right of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, not morality.

Wrong again. The GOP was taking a MORAL POSITION against slavery. Hundreds and thousands of laws are based upon a moral position, i.e, a determination of what is believed to be the correct, right thing to do.
