Washington (CNN)Republican officials who oppose Donald Trump as their party nominee have spent the last few days -- ever since the withdrawal from the race of Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich -- wondering if there is anything they could have done to prevent this outcome. Top officials of the Cruz campaign are convinced there is one specific step that could have stopped Trump -- and they blame Sen. Marco Rubio for not taking that step.
In early March, it became clear that Trump was well on his way to the nomination and would even likely defeat Rubio in his home state of Florida's March 15 primary. According to several sources close to Cruz, the Cruz campaign conducted several secret polls to see what the impact would be if Rubio joined Cruz as his running mate, with Cruz at the top of the ticket.

The GOP Strawman’s Lament
Oh I’d while away the hours
Conferrin’ with the flowers
Consultin’ with the rain
And my head, I’d be scratchin’
While my thoughts were busy hatchin’
I’d unravel every riddle
For any individual
In trouble or in pain
With the thoughts you’ll be thinkin’
You could be another Lincoln
If you only had a brain
One thing about it, the two candidates would have been in sync 100 percent on these issues as they are both open-borders, globalist candidates.
She’s carrying he own bags? I wonder if Huma will cry over this?
Everybody is keeping their distance! Lonely Girl....
Thanks and I hope that month goes very quickly.
You wish there had been a Cruz-Rubio ticket, but you are going to vote Trump (I presume, since you’re still here)? THAT is cognitive dissonance at its most extreme. (I.e., two polar opposite belief systems simultaneously existing in your mind...Hard to imagine two more diametrically opposed political stances than that of Trump versus that of Cruz/Rubio.)
I wonder how Carly feels about this? Cruz is a back stabbing loser.
Rubio was right to stay away from Cruz. He's deranged. Beck proved that. The oath of office thing was beyond embarassing. The establishment was using him, but didn't support him. He didn't care, he pressed on, to no good end. He lost all perspective, something a Reagan never would do.
Were I Trump, I would give a speech specifically directed at Cruz. I would tell him this:
"You can hate me, I don't care. You can pout and whine and play games in the shadows for the rest of this campaign, or you can decide if you truly are an anti-establishment figure determined to overthrow the legacy of failure of the globalists who have formed a party that is more comfortable with Hillary than with an America First agenda.
You can do that by continuing to fight against illegal immigration. Join me in calling for the wall and support me when I take the steps to enforce our existing laws. Work to prevent a runaway lame duck Congress that would pass TPP and other laws that they know President Trump would never sign.
Work to improve our judiciary. Provide constructive comments on the list of potential justices I will provide, and if you know of others who should be listed, feel free to suggest them. Go to the Senate and continue arguing for the Freedom Caucus and its positions. Assist the House Republicans to expose the agenda of House leadership and prevent them from thwarting the will of the people.
In all those things, do them on your own account, not for mine. Show that you meant all that you said on the campaign trail. Do those things, and you will play a part in remaking the Republican party into a truly representative conservative party. Refuse, and you will show petulance and an allegiance to something other than principle."
Shame him into either following his professed principles or showing his true colors. His followers may see the wisdom in such a speech, whatever Cruz does.

Nah, Linda Graham was the way.
Classic!
I don’t trust Cruz yet. When he dropped out of the race he said that he was suspending his campaign. The word “suspending” means something that is temporarily stopped, not permanently stopped. He left the door open a little. Scary!
The term “suspending” is almost always used by presidential campaign dropouts.
Imo Cruz was foolish to pick a VP running mate before he had locked up 1237 votes. I hope that Trump, Clinton, and Sanders will not be that foolish.
That was the very moment that Cruz lost my vote. I'd already written off Rubio by then.
3 days before that debate, Trump hater extraordinaire Ben Shapiro did a piece that said they should "machine gun" Trump from both sides. They did just that and only strengthened Trumps support while killing their own chances.
Smooth move, Ted.
Unless Abbott moves on to something else, Ted would probably lose that election in a spectacular fashion.
Maybe he could do a Wendy and hold a few more filibusters in his tennis shoes
That's why I say Cruzers are stupid. Such a move probably would have plummeted their support due to its sheer desperation. Cruz obviously did the same type of polling with Carly and thought she'd help him sweep the upcoming states. T
Cruz, you lost. Please shut up now.
Cruz/Rubio
Two people born to foreign nationals and therefore ineligible to run for president but I guess the US Constitution doesn’t matter anymore. I hope we get this eligibility issue settled once and for all before the next election.

Strange word to choose for closing down a campaign. Maybe many of them hope to leave a little window open.

Agree that the cards would not be in his favor if Abbott
runs for re-election.
