I have a photo of our entire mess hall crew, in uniform, flipping the finger—a la Animal House.
It wasn’t a controversy at all. It was considered funny.

When I was in high school in suburban Maryland in the late 1970s, we had a “Drill Team” composed entirely of black females. Jump suits, berets, jumping around and clenched fists. Maybe some similar background here.

Why isn't this all over TV?
If it were white cadets giving the Nazi salute, it would be all over the tube and the cadets would be blindfolded, given a last electric cigarette and lined up at the wall.
A perfect news item for O'Reilly, but I'm afraid "blacks" and "women" would be too much for the Mighty Warrior Bloviator to handle in one story without fear and trepidation.
