Trump shores up Republican unity as he takes on Clinton
Yahoo News ^ | May 5, 2016 | Michael Mathis

Billionaire Donald Trump set about unifying a fractured Republican party Thursday, fortified by the support of a key party leader as he launches into battle for the White House against likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Late Wednesday the top Republican in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, publicly endorsed Trump's candidacy "to prevent what would be a third term of Barack Obama."

"As the presumptive nominee, he now has the opportunity and the obligation to unite our party around our goals,” McConnell said in a statement.

Trump's commanding victory in Indiana's primary Tuesday pushed remaining challengers Ted Cruz and then Ohio Governor Kasich out of the race, leaving the real estate tycoon an uncontested path to the nomination.

Their capitulations brought the curtain down on one of the most contentious and chaotic nomination battles in generations, in which Trump pummelled no fewer than 16 rivals into submission.

"Now we'll unify the party," Trump, 69, told Fox News on Wednesday. "We're going to get people together."...

...."I know people aren't sure right now what a President Trump will be like," he told The NYT.

"But things will be fine. I'm not running for president to make things unstable for the country."

To be fair, many of the Cruzerman contingent are going through the despair stage of grief, and some of those who aren’t lib trolls egging them on express that despair through spite.

The bargaining stage was this second ballot nonsense, and we all saw the anger stage.

Trump has expanded the party by 15%-20% in looking at the voting statistics. Which other candidate had the potential to expand the republican vote?

We were shrinking as a percentage of the electorate; and that trend will continue with unabated immigration.

The best example of America’s future is California.

This republican state produced republican governors and two republican presidents. Do to the massive influx of foreigners, republican registration is below 30%. The California state house flipped to democrat years ago and the republicans are completely marginalized. They have a small and shrinking voice in the corner.

Is that what conservatives want for America? Every other candidate has either betrayed their vote for American sovereignty or is lying about their intentions because they were clearly beholden to ‘the cheap labor express’ and globalist interests. Kiss conservatism goodbye with open borders. Conservatives will eventually be relegated to a plantation or reservation, of sorts. A small ideologically pure quaint community, much like the Amish.

If the republican base is not expanded and voters are not given a reason to vote besides “ideological constitutional principles” the party will shrink and disintegrate. There will become less and less of a chance of maintaining anything conservative and definitely no advancement of an agenda. Only retreat.

Americans want jobs, and they have been attracted to a job creating patriotic highly successful business man. Americans want to feel safe and secure and the other candidates proposed nothing new or haven’t done anything to impede terrorists from entering the USA. Trump was the only one who boldly condemned radical islam and calling for a moratorium on ME integration. And he questioned the 911 Commission. Jumping on the bandwagon and pretending to be strong eight days after Trump’s proclamations, doesn’t count.

People are attracted to the candidate at the top level, the face of the party, and this will result in more R votes than D on the down ballot, as well. Trump is the right man at the right time for America.

Most politicians kowtow to every little segment saying 'I need your support, please support me, what can I do to get your support?'.

Trump is saying 'Here is my agenda, if you like it or can live with it, come on board, otherwise I don't need you.'

'Criticize it and me from the outside'.

That way you can decide for yourself, but he's not coming to run after you for your support.

It's an admirable stand, one which only a confident politician would take.

That's why you've never been confronted with this choice before.

See post # 22 in answer.

And yes, What conservatives? Where are they? Maybe they are hiding in a cave?

Very few conservatives have been electable. And many who run on a conservative platform change very quickly once elected to office.

Quite frankly, this country has moved so far left I doubt that a “true conservative” in the traditional sense could get elected president. Some unrelated event, the sudden demise or scandal for the democrat would have to occur. The conservative would win by default, that’s the only way he’d overcome the constant drum of the MSM.

I’m not sure Romney did get a large Indie vote. He did in New Hampshire, but not in the states where it counts for big EV, like Florida or Ohio.

What specifically is a candidate supposed to offer conservatives?? And pie in the sky ideological talking points are completely discounted. Name five things a conservative president should be able to accomplish in a four year term.

Here’s a start:

1. Trump will pick from a list of pre-screened conservative judges for the SCOTUS appointments. (Sessions on the team of screeners)

2. Trump promised to back up and preserve the 2nd Amendment. He & his fam are CWP holders and the sons love hunting. He spoke at the Shot Show in Vegas with favorable reviews. No plans for gun-grabbing. None.

Yes, promises from a man who claims to be a republican which I guess really means a populist. Who has donated $ to many political candidates both republican and democrat like
Cuomo, Hevisi , Spitzer, Rangel , Silver, Clinton, Reid, Mc Cain , Crist , and Spectre. Dare I ask if he has donated to any proven conservative candidates ? So once again for the 3rd straight presidential election I am told to hold my nose and vote for someone who is not a conservative candidate. When do the independents, the moderates and the establishment hold their noses and pull the lever for a conservative? I guess they believe they can di it without the “ tea party “ members that gave the republican party back the house and Senate. Well good luck with that.

So to you is globalism a big part of conservatism? Then count me out. I’ll go with the nationalist pro American.

The name calling doesn’t help, I agree.

Three candidates remain, you can decide whom to choose.

Bernie

Hillary

Trump

Don’t lecture me on name-calling. “Lyin’ Ted”, “Look at that face...”, etc.

It's an admirable stand, one which only a confident politician would take.

It also completely deflects attention from the ridiculous "never" fools.

What they want is for Trump to make some sort of kowtow towards them, so they can flounce away in righteous indignation saying "Never means Never!!!"

Instead, he's dismissed them as irrelevant. And, seriously, what do we think at this point is going to make Bill Kristol suddenly start supporting Trump?

Okay then, have it your way and go and vote for Hillary. but I hope your a West Virginia Freeper

“Instead of dividing people the way Donald Trump does, let’s reunite around policies that will bring jobs and opportunities to all these undeserved poor communities,” Clinton boasted — immediately, hypocritically, and even jovially following up with this zinger:

“So, for example, I’m the only candidate which has a policy about how to bring economic opportunity using clean, renewable energy as the key into coal country. Because we’re going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business.”

....the damage from such a powerful dismissal of the livelihoods of generations of Americans had already been indelibly marked in the hearts of coal mining families — as well as in the minds of members of West Virginia’s Republican Party.

And if you are from New Jersey, explain how your candidate could have won the primary or General Election in your state.
Trump was guaranteed every delegate vote in NJ. He is the only republican that could win NJ in the GE. Maybe has a 40% chance, we’ll see.

“Trump Scum.”

Great example of “principles.”

Do you shout “Cruza Akbar!” as you type that kind of thing?

Still, I think many Cruz Supporters are still in the True Grief stage. The loss is still fresh. Been there myself many times.

I didn’t care if either guy won - both have strengths and weaknesses.

Not really.
(USA Today) Toby Neugebauer, a wealthy energy investor, likes Ted Cruz so much that he deposited $10 million into a super PAC designed to boost the Texas Republican’s presidential ambitions.

On Wednesday, Neugebauer was in Donald Trump’s camp after the reality TV star’s big win in the Indiana primary Tuesday ended the campaigns of Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

“Today, I am a Trump supporter,” Neugebauer told USA TODAY. “I am excited about the voters he turned up.”
