A pair of stories out of Germany today illustrates the persistent gap between the lofty, ambitious rhetoric and small, faltering actions on government and defense in Europe today. The Telegraph reports:
German soldiers taking part in a four-week Nato exercise in Norway earlier this year had to leave after just 12 days because they had gone over their overtime limits, it has emerged. Troops have complained to a parliamentary watchdog that they are being forced to spend entire days doing nothing under the new rules.
It cant be that we cant fulfil our Nato obligations because of overtime, Hans-Peter Bertels, the German parliamentary commissioner for the armed forces, told Bild am Sonntag newspaper.[..]
Under the latest reforms, in force since January, the military working week has been reduced to 41 hours and troops can no longer be paid for working overtime.
This would have prevented a heck of a lot of trouble in 1939.
Actually, it explains blitzkrieg— had to get through Belgium before overtime kicked in.
Good point.
Too bad the Germans didn’t have such an “army” in ww2!
Frederick the Great is facepalming in his grave.
What rank is shop Stewart? Sounds like a nice gig. /sarc.
Notice how the little guys do their part and are appreciative of our help, while the big, lazy socialist countries seem to feel they are “entitled” to our financing, as well as providing for their protection from Russia. These countries are also on the border with Russia, so they would be the first to go if Russia decided to invade Europe. Countries like France and Germany play off the notion that we will protect them as a firewall to our own protection. Guess what? President Trump will likely not see it that way.
can visualize Hindenburg, Rommel and Von Manstein rolling over in their graves.
...more like double face-palming with a wass ist der F’in’ los!? for good measure
Wow. I wish the US Army paid overtime, back when I was in.
Overtime? In the Army? Gott in Himmel! If the Wehrmacht had had these rules, the French Army would have overrun Berlin in three days.
I would have retired at 25.
