There is a line of thought floating around that the RNC wants to lose, not just because it shares cronyism with DEMs (although that's at rock bottom), but also to teach the conservatives who use Trump as a vehicle, a lesson that won't be forgotten for a generation.

I believe that there are actually quite a few GOPe types that think exactly that.

Yep - the lemonade they prefer to make out of the Trump lemon is to have him beaten soundly in the electoral college.

If you look at this race as a battle between globalists and nationalists, with Trump being the only nationalist, it fits together great. The GOPe and the DEM parties, both globalists but of slightly different flavors, will unite in an effort to beat Trump. Beating Trump preserves status quo style of politics and governing (by the incompetent), and serves as an object lesson in "who's the boss" to the masses.
