When Hillary was first elected to the Senate, she and McCain were part of a Senate committee junket to Iceland. McCain's gift from his Navy days was to be able to find alcohol in even the most unlikely places, and he came up with two bottles of a fine California red.

As I heard the story, Hillary came to his room, and as they downed those two bottles, she unburdened herself about her career failures, her unfaithful, worthless horn dog of a husband, and everything else that had gone wrong in her life. She and McCain became good friends.

McCain invited Hillary to spend weekends from DC with Cindy and Megan at his condo in Sedona. As a result, Hillary became close to McCain's wife and daughter. Cindy and Hillary would go shopping in Sedona, with Hillary wearing her dark glasses in the hope of being ignored.

That connection still exists today. We tend to forget that the US Senate is one of the most exclusive clubs in the world, and people from both sides of the aisle can form lasting friendships in spite of political differences. Barry Goldwater and Hubert Humphrey were close friends, as Barry had been with Jack Kennedy when he was in the Senate. The friendship between McCain and Hillary falls into the same category.
