Personally, I believe Mr. Trump shining the light on Cruz Sr and his Oswald/CIA connections was just too much for the Bush Crime Family, who didn’t want anything more to be exposed. They hope that by pulling the plug on Cruz, the light will go out on that, and to a good extent, they are probably correct.
