Saving his ass at this point most likely means kissing Trump’s ring and hoping for a seat on a bench.
He probably bet it all on winning this race after slipstreaming behind Trump, and then getting the any port in a storm support of the “Washington Cartel” for the last lap.
I really think Cruz will come to his senses if that happens.
If not, he's in a world of trouble when he runs again for anything.
