What about - husband dies, leaves, she’s never worked in all those years. She will NOT be getting a good job. Men her age want 20-somethings. She isn’t wanted at the couple’s gatherings any more. That feeling of being alone poor and helpless could do it.
I’m sure that’s a major player here.
