I was skeptical about the 24 hour thing because I got the feeling they were detecting cases that didn’t even involve bites (with the stress on washing hands after handling them)...

That was my suspicion.

While you describe the time of attachment as shrinking, I thought it was going the other way (from instant transmission out to 24 hours); I never knew they had used a 48- and 72-hour window in the past.

A woman I know has severe permanent damage to her body due to a doctor's ego.

Anybody kick his ass yet?

Trinity County, Ca. is considered ground zero for Lyme Disease in the western United States.
Yes; I had it, probably still have it (treatment was about 4 months late and only at my assistance).
Own a home in So. Cal. and own a farm in No. Cal.
Got back to So. Ca. and only heard from the doctors that I couldn’t get Lyme in southern California in the city, no ticks.
Told them for 3 and a half months that I had been brushing out my fields in No. Cal.
Couldn’t get it through their heads that in a 12 hour drive you can get into places that have an awful lot of ticks.

We’ve always dusted arms, legs, and clothing, with our “sulphur sock”. This prevented many of the woodsy creatures from biting our children. We spent many weeks a year at our Riverhouse and so far, no infections.

I’m kidna sure they had 72 at one point- but definitely that had 48- I don’t think they really know- they were saying at one time it took that long for the ‘spirocette’ (sp?) to work it’s way from the innards of the tick to the bloodstream of host- but now they’ve changed that-

That story by the brilliant novelist Amy Tan was intense. I had no idea.

I know someone whose husband appeared to be very ill and losing his mind. I saw her every day. For weeks she raced from work to his bedside in a hospital. They weren’t sure he was going to make it. Clearly CA docs don’t have a clue. Finally he got,dx’ed with Lyme syndrome. He is much better.

A former professional wrestler friend of mine was recently diagnosed with this. It’s horrible what it has done to her. She was always cheerful and vibrant, but has become quite morose and is in constant pain. From super-fit to slightly dumpy. She can’t concentrate on anything, is very easily confused and hyper-emotional all the time, etc., just like the linked story.

She’s undergoing treatment now, but she knows it’s going to be a long haul.

Oh, I didn’t doubt you; I just think this information trickles out at different paces in different places. There is a soccer field in a neighboring town where deer have been spotted, and they have a Lyme disease warning telling people to shower after using the field and to call a doctor if they get a fever. Having had Lyme disease myself, I think that is inadequate to say the least; at least use bug spray and tell them to check (diligently) after their kids have taken tumbles in the grass...

Mice are highly efficient transmitters of Lyme. They infect up to 95 percent of ticks that feed on them. Mice are responsible for infecting the majority of ticks carrying Lyme in the Northeast. And ticks love mice. “An individual mouse might have 50, 60, even 100 ticks covering its ears and face,” Ostfeld says.

So that mouse plague last year means there is going to be a Lyme plague this year. “Yep. I'm sorry to say that's the scenario we're expecting,” Ostfeld says.
