My uncle used to eat bugs, crickets and grubs.
While he was being held in a Japanese internment camp during WW II.

Said it was superior to whatever the Japs were willing to feed him.

Yeah, in the historical novel, "King Rat", towards the end, the "guests" of Hirohito in Korea were eventually reduced to eating rat and a paste made from gringing cockroaches, iirc. (Read the book in the 1970s.)

On my stack of books, I have "The Taste of War" about food during WWII. Barely started it, but in the intro, it mentions 2M Vietnamese starved to death after the tide turned against Japan.
