Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey says he cast his presidential vote for Ted Cruz, describing the Texas senator as having a deep understanding of the issues and "concrete" ideas on the economy and national security.
"He's a solid conservative," Toomey said this morning outside his polling place in Zionsville. "We don't agree on everything, but having served with him in the Senate, I know Ted pretty well and I think he's got a real, real viable shot of beating Hillary Clinton in the fall."
While Donald Trump leads among Republicans in public polls of state voters, Toomey noted that the nomination process "doesn't end in Pennsylvania."
Toomey had endorsed Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who ended his presidential bid in March.
The Lehigh Valley legislator said he "got out of the endorsement business" after that, noting that his own re-election race will be his main focus.
As for his own electoral odds, Toomey - who will be watching returns come in at an event in Pittsburgh - was focused on today's balloting.
"I think my chances of winning today are pretty good," Toomey quipped, referring to his unchallenged status on the primary ballot.
Four Democrats are vying for a shot at unseating Toomey: retired admiral Joe Sestak, former environmental adviser Katie McGinty, Braddock Mayor John Fetterman, and western Pennsylvania small businessman Joe Vodvarka.
Toomey described Sestak and McGinty, the front-runners in that contest, as "very liberal candidates, way outside the mainstream of Pennsylania voters," adding that he feels confident about his shot at gaining a second term.
"I think Ive been able to be very productive in the Senate reaching across the aisle and getting things done for Pennsylvania," Toomey said. "I think my focus on economic growth and security are exactly what voters tell me is important to them."

Toomey is a well-behaved GOPe. No surprise there.
I think Pat was supposed to vote for Kasich per Ted’s brilliant plan
I see that 2% of the Senate (3% including himself) now supports Ted Cruz.
Congratulations to Ted.
No wonder the GOP doesn’t get anything done in the Senate, they are out of touch with reality.
Trump reminds Toomey of Arlen Specter.
Well when most of a blue state goes huge Trump I not so sure that was smart
I hope this clown loses his seat in November. What a huge disappointment Toomey has been. Getting in bed with the gun grabbers.
Go figure
Toomey, Cruz, Kasich, Sanders, Clinton along with other current and former members of the gang of 535 should be in federal prison.
6. But the grand nostrum will be a public debt
7. It must not be forgotten that the members of the legislative body are to have a deep stake in the game. This is an essential point, and happily is attended with no difficulty. A sufficient number, properly disposed, can alternately legislate and speculate, and speculate and legislate, and buy and sell, and sell and buy, until a due portion of the property of their constituents has passed into their hands
10. Divide and govern is a maxim consecrated by the experience of ages, and should be familiar in its use to every politician
11. As soon as sufficient progress in the intended change shall have been made, and the public mind duly prepared according to the rules already laid down, it will be proper to venture on another and a bolder step toward a removal of the constitutional landmarks.

Adios, America.
I didn’t vote for Toomey today, just left the ballot blank. I voted for the Donald, and the delegates who are guaranteed to him. Also, I voted for Stanley Casacio for Congress against GOPe Pat Meehan.
We all know how it works and understand the issues but we need someone that can fix the issues, that is not Cruz. Quoting the Constitution to people that ignore the Constitution is not productive.
He probably imagines that people will think he's conservative because he voted for Cruz.
Why exactly is this front page news? Do we care that Pat Toomey voted for Ted? Is Toomey’s vote any more important than any other Pennsylvania citizens’?
Explains why he didn't vote for Trump...
Toomey was the only name for the PA Republican Primary slot for Senator so I voted for him in the primary today. Sorry to hear he’s supporting Cruz. This does not make me a happy voter.
i did not vote for toomey
Living in PA for 17 years, he’s establishment...
Big Whoop. Who cares?
LOL, well, better Ted than Marco. He’ll be outvoted anyways today.
