Interesting analysis. I would only add that to a degree Rush propped up Trump during the summer and fall, liking his spoiler status, expecting Trump would fade as the primary season began. By Christmas it was clear that wouldn't happen. Remember, during that time, there was a lot of thought that as Trump likely waned his supporters would turn to Ted. Neither has happened. Trump hasn't withered. And Trump supporters are more determined than ever to support him no matter the situation or negative report.

As time has worn on, Rush has been more and more blunt about Limbaugh without actually stating his support for Cruz.

But early on, Rush really liked Trump's insurgency.

That is very true, Rush’s animus about “Trumpists” is because the damn guy just refuses to fade. Rush was probably in on Cruz’s strategy of drafting behind Trump from the beginning, and has so tied himself to it that he now feels part of the team. Like some of the shills we see here, who got caught up emotionally, and now can’t give it up.
