Good question.
My guess is your grass (and mine) is missing a nutrient other than CO2.
I'm going to get some lawn fertilizer (only to help sequester some of those bad greenhouse gases of course).

the damper nodulus cuts in when the internal CO2 level reaches the limit imposed by the genes specific to the kind of grass.
to improve grass, add nitrogen and potash and phosphate
