John Madden once said that is because, outside of Philly, people attempt to make them with real food.
Is that some kind of PC Philadelphia cultural appropriation? I've had plenty of great Philly Cheese Steaks outside of Philly. It's not rocket science.

It brings a tear to my eye every time I realize the truth of this statement. I just had one for lunch today...100 miles from Phili. It filled me up, but it just wasn’t the same. One absolute necessity virtually impossible to find outside of the city is an Amoroso sub roll.
Place went out of business in about 4 months. Guess it's an acquired taste.
