In ‘98 I was in a Kinkos in San Jose updating my passport.
Next to me was a HP executive getting copies of an HP document.
He walked away for some reason and I looked over and read the first 3-4 paragraphs.
It documented HP’s plans to outsource much of their technical work to India and boost the financial benefits to stock holders, executive staff and the improved health of HP.
I was shocked.
A year later, a number of my HP friends started telling me stories about how India workers were being brought into the USA and they were training them to take their jobs under penalty of immediate termination.
Remember this was right at the end of the .com boom so most of these workers assumed it would last forever. They just figured they would get new jobs at another .com company.
This was a plan setup by Carly to use as leverage to get her CEO title.
The end result is HP sold off their technology and quickly, long term engineers stopped thinking about solving problems and started covering their butts.
HP is now just a shadow of what it used to be and this all happened within a 10 year cycle.
And it all began with Carly rising to power and convincing HP to buy Compaq
