I know what you mean. I saw Adams Family Values in a theatre in London. Many people were not sure when to laugh. Others were whispering, wondering if Americans were really like that.
As an aside, I bought a first class ticket in a large theatre at Marble Arch corner, Hyde Park. Bottom row balcony, front and center, concessions people came and asked me what I wanted. Ticket cost me about $50.
