SCOTLANDS super-regiment celebrated their 10th birthday in stunning style yesterday.
Crowds flocked to see the Royal Regiment of Scotland march through Edinburgh with flying colours to mark their historic anniversary.
Regimental mascot Cruachan IV, a Shetland pony, was cheered by onlookers as he led the parade featuring an honour guard of 100 soldiers with the Band of The Royal Regiment of Scotland and the pipes and drums of 2 SCOTS, The Royal Highland Fusiliers.
Senior officer Major General James Cowan said: Our soldiers are proud to parade in Edinburgh symbolising the support we receive from the wider community across Scotland and we are very grateful to Edinburgh City Council for allowing us to Exercise our Freedom.
Since the Regiment was formed in 2006, our soldiers have deployed almost continuously on operations around the world so the Regiment are now building their own proud history as we head into the future.
The service in the Canongate Kirk will provide us with an opportunity to reflect on our first 10 years and commemorate those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
Edinburghs Depute Lord Provost Steve Cardownie, said: It is an honour to welcome The Royal Regiment of Scotland to the City Chambers. This parade is a fitting demonstration of Edinburghs support for the brave men and women who continue to put their lives at risk in service of this country.

If I understand correctly, this regiment was formed when the British army downsized and combined, among others, such famous units as the Black Watch into one new single regiment, the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
All honor to them; but I still mourn the loss of the heritage of the earlier units
(and with the British army was large enough to have continued to sustain them)

Always thrilling to hear the pipes even if the only Scotch I can claim in me may very well come from a flask. Still makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck everytime!

America has a lot of Scottish influence - the patriotism and masculinity is very comforting. I am just plain homesick for those things.

Yes...so sad too that Scotland went down the Socialist road...I have a good friend from there...she and her husband left in the late 60s, seeing the writing on the wall.
