And the huge numbers of violent crimes committed by recidivists on parole, probation, or awaiting trial indicates we have too few people in prison, not too many.
I read an article on-line a year or so ago about the numbers of violent crimes committed by paroled or escaped prisoners. It wasn't a small number.
So when the anti-death penalty people start arguing about the "evil" death penalty, they should be reminded of how many innocent people have been murdered by escaped or paroled violent offenders.
I should add I came close to being a statistic due to a paroled violent offender about thirteen years ago. Some violent offender/nut on parole tried to kill me by ramming my car. If I had stepped outside my car instead of staying inside, he might have gotten me. As it was he just put a big dent in my car door.
