Does anyone have a synopsis of why the south bailed on Cruz?
I’m thinking that the powers that be pegged us all wrong..just because you’re religious does’t mean you’ll vote for the guy carrying the Bible around but has supported policies that endanger ordinary citizens.
I’m not for Cruz - think he’s a lying phony (not to mention can’t stand listening to him) - but early on I was interested in him and even sent money, much to my regret.
I think the Cruz campaign made the same mistake as most other non-southerners make in assuming the region cares about moral issues above everything else. Southerners are just as concerned about the economy, runaway illegal immigration and Islamic threats to the homeland as everyone else in the country. I think most people in the south don’t like politicians shoving religion in their faces either. When they analyze the 2016 race I think the biggest question pondered will be how did Cruz lose in the south?
I can’t answer your question but I do have an anecdote. Namely, the very first person I know who supported Trump—this was several mos before Trump announced—is a very devout Christian pastor, and a Southerner of many generations. He said, “The politicians have all but destroyed the country. Time to give a businessman a chance.”
Fwiw.
Cruz lost the south because they saw him for what he is, a liar and a hypocrite. Both character faults are quite obvious.
