Cruz has alienated all but the hardest core of "militant" conservatives and if he were to somehow steal the nomination, he would have to do the same with some of his rhetoric or get crushed by Hillary. Trump has very little he has to modify to stay competitive - he knows that the WH is the goal and slavering rhetoric that pleases the far right and the "God needs to smite thee" folks will not play in the General.
