Back in 1970, when the world celebrated the first Earth Day, environmentalists were worried that without dramatic measures, the future would be catastrophic for the Earth and civilization. But their grim predictions havent come true, The Daily Caller News Foundation pointed out today, assembling a list of seven incorrect predictions of doom regarding the planet and civilization. The following are highlights from their list.
The end of civilization within three decades
Nobel laureate George Wald prophesied in 1970 that civilization would end unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind, The Daily Caller reported. Civilization is still here.
Hundreds of millions will starve
Paul Ehrlich, author of The Population Bomb, forecast in 1970 that vast famines would occur in that decade and the next. England would be hit by food shortages, the country would collapse, and civilization would come to an end. And yet the worlds per capita GDP has grown even as the global population has, and fewer people live in poverty.
Gas masks will be required in cities
In January of 1970, Life Magazine claimed that people would have to wear gas masks in cities in ten years due to pollution, and that in 1985, air pollution would cause the world to receive only half the normal amount of sunlight. In fact, air quality is getting better, the World Health Organization says.
The worlds oil will run out
Kenneth Watt, an ecologist, predicted in 1970 that there would be no more oil in the future. Watt wasnt the only one who thought the worlds oil was peaking but he was wrong. In fact, today there is an oil glut, leading to cheap prices. Part of the reason for that is the boom of fracking in the United States,

The way the environmental movement was co-opted by the open borders lobby, and became simply an other left wing special interest, is a fascinating story.
Predictions - Science == Random(x);
1970...Isn’t that the same timeframe that we were headed towards the next ice age?
Well the end of civilization pretty much has happened.
When Bill Clinton was re-elected despite his sleazy and illegal record. Then to make sure we were gone, we elected then re-elected the Marxist/Communist.
Well, the predictions weren’t entirely wrong. We certainly have seen the end of civilization.
“I bet all these environmentalists are liberals... “
Well, no sh*t. Will the sun come up tomorrow?
Oh yes. I was a high school student back then. We were all going to freeze to death unless we did pretty much the same thing the global warming cult wants us do now: turn over all political and economic control to them.
I remember some of this stuff as a kid.....junk science.
Bkmrk.
Obesity is a bigger problem (no pun intended) than starvation.
but the acid was great!
I fell for the gloom and doom forecasts back then but was turned around by Ben Wattenberg’s book, THE GOOD NEWS IS THE BAD NEWS IS WRONG.
I remember very well that our Junior HS science textbooks in the mid 1970s showed a picture of people walking in the street with gas masks on and dark skies in daytime. They were teaching doom and gloom for the planet even back then.
