There were no primaries in 1860. There was only a convention. The first Presidential Primary didn’t occur until 1912.

Lincoln won on the third ballot of a contested convention. And the country promptly went into a bloody civil war when he won in a 4-way race with 39.8% of the popular vote. No thanks.
