AP declares Cruz mathematically eliminated from first-ballot delegate race

Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz is mathematically eliminated from winning the GOP nomination on the first ballot, according to the Associated Press.

GOP front-runner Donald Trump is now the only Republican candidate who can clinch the nomination before the GOP convention in July, as there aren’t enough remaining delegates for either Cruz or John Kasich to reach the 1,237 threshold.

It has been a generation since I’ve lived in Texas, and Texas was losing much of its salt then. So, I can’t gainsay you. A shame though. Texas deserves more, and better, IMO.

In a sane world that would have happened weeks ago but they relish the role of spoiler and are being egged on to do so. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth for Cruz who I want to like but...he lost. Be a man, admit it’s over and go do something else. Winning through technicalities is the realm of the leftist,

I am confused why Cruz supporters keep bringing up the 1860 election of Lincoln and claiming that process hasn’t changed since then. Don’t they realize that anyone who is posting here has either a computer or some other device capable of looking up how elections were conducted during that time period.

Homework assignment for Cruz supporters: How many people voted for Lincoln before the convention? (Warning, its a trick question.)

I was just reading an article showing some of the inconsistencies Cruz has in his stated background. Among them, his father has a fake name and birthday. Another is Cruz may not even be a Canadian citizen, as he was already a Cuban one because of his father and Canada does not accept dual citizenships. Has anyone else heard these things?

Makes sense, actually. He's born in Canada. Check. At the time, his mother is Amerian, his father is Cuban, check. So - what is he?

Canadian, I'd suppose, in virtue of being born there. Unless Canada has birth laws that require parental citizenship, in which case he's not a Canadian, because Canada didn't allow dual citizenship.

In which case, which parent does Canada pick to assign him a country - mother or father? American or Cuban? How can he be natural born, if he's born out of the US with a Cuban father, and two other countries have claims on his citizenship status?

There were zero primary elections when Lincoln ran for president. So the candidate was selected by delegate

Your inane response is so typical of the Cruz losers unable to face today’s reality. You go back to the 1860’s or lie about the future that Trump can’t win.

Let us know where you think the stock market is going and what are good buys. Then we can do the opposite.

What hasn’t changed is this: Delegates to the national convention are elected at the state conventions. Those delegates are sent to the national convention to represent the PARTY, not some large group—less than a majority—of “the people” who may not reflect the party ideal.

The mere fact that someone wins a plurality on the first ballot MUST NEVER obligate the Party to make him their nominee. A MAJORITY of the delegates must come together to make the nomination. Otherwise, you’re paving the way for a hostile takeover by outsiders.

Imagine if, in 2012, Bernie Sanders had declared himself a Republican and run for president. With no reason for Democrats to show up for the incumbent Obama, Sanders could have easily won many of the Republican primaries through mass crossover voting. Would you want the party to follow “the will of the people” then?

So what? The PARTY--not "the people"--selected the delegates, just like today.

Your inane response is so typical of the Cruz losers unable to face today’s reality. You go back to the 1860’s

Oh, so now, it's "inane" to refer to historical precedent?

And your point relating to this contest is??? Your attempt at equivocating for Cruz’s latest tactics are silly. Trump doesn’t have just a few more delegates than Cruz... he has over 50% more delegates than Cruz. He has received millions more votes than Cruz, by the convention it will be several million more votes than Cruz. Trump is most likely to get to 1237 but even if he does not, to avoid sending the Republican party to the scrap heap, GOP leadership will find enough unbound delegates to get Trump to 1237.

The leadership would have loved to have stopped Trump. They insiders infiltrated Cruz’s campaign team and used him as a tool to do it. They manipulated the system in Wyoming and Colorado to the point where the voters had no actual input at all. This year has certainly been an eye opener. Leadership now knows that they went way too far but they don’t care; they are going to hang it all on Cruz. And incredibly Cruz keeps going along with it. After this is over Cruz’s reputation and credibility will be so damaged that he will not be able to win an election for dog catcher.

As far as the second, third or fourth ballots that are not going to happen... even with all the dirty tricks, Cruz still has no way to get enough of his surrogates installed as other candidates delegates to get the hundreds he would actually need to get to a majority. And only Cruz surrogates will believe that a candidate who hasn’t been able to do well in even one battle ground state has any chance at winning the election.

Cruz has only one possible way to salvage what it left of his reputation. He needs to admit that it is over and start working with Trump to unite the party. This would show that he actually cares for the country more than himself. In return Trump might very well nominate him to take the spot Scalia left open on the Supreme Court. Is it going to happen? Of course not, Cruz is going to circle the drain and make a spectacular splat when he goes down.

So you think that Trump will increase votes in rounds 2-5 if they need to go to a second round? I think he needs to get 1237 on first round or he won’t win.

Thanks, for amplifying my point about the Lincoln comparison to what is happening today is inane!

I will gladly give you the credit. Thank you for reminding me last night about the actual events that resulted in Lincoln getting the nomination. I seem to recall the followers of another nominee who kept comparing their guy to Lincoln. Just one more parallel Cruz now has with the Harvard educated Constitutional Scholar who has been occupying the Whitehouse.
