A recent black Kean University graduate faces up to 90 days in jail and $82,000 in restitution for creating a false public alarm by using a fake Twitter account to threaten black students.
Kayla McKelvey, 25, pleaded guilty to the charge Monday in a Union County court after a judge previously rejected a plea deal that would have allowed her to avoid jail time and eventually erase the charge from her record, NJ.com reports.
The new arrangement comes with a recommended 90-day jail sentence and an $82,000 bill to cover the increased campus security and investigation into several messages posted to Twitter on Nov. 17, 2015 that threatened to kill black students on campus.
McKelvey, a self-proclaimed activist, was participating in a race rally when she left the event and went to the university library, where she created an anonymous Twitter account to send messages like @kupolice I will kill all the blacks tonight, tomorrow and any other day they go to Kean University, prosecutors said.
Other messages, posted by @keanuagainstblk included I will kill every black male and female at kean university, i will shoot every black woman and male I see at kean university #keanuniversity, and i will shoot every black person i see at kean university, the Daily Mail reports.
McKelvey returned to the rally after posting the messages and attempted to work her classmates into a frenzy over the threats, CBS News reports.
Last Thursday, Judge William Daniel pointed out that McKelvey admitted to sending the messages, quoting her statement to police that I went about it the wrong way, and rejected a plea deal that would have awarded McKelvey a pretrial intervention. The intervention is a probation program that allows participants to expunge the charge if completed successfully.
The prosecutors office previously offered McKlevey a plea deal of six months in jail, Philly.com reports.
During that hearing, McKleveys attorney argued that shes remorseful for her action, and pointed out that she lost her job and her friends. She was the president of the Pan African Student Union and the schools 2014 homecoming queen, according to the Daily Mail.
Neither McKlevey nor her attorney have spoken with the media, but Kean University issued a public statement about her guilty plea Monday.
The University thanks the Union County Prosecutors Office and the Kean Police Department for helping to put this sad incident behind us, and allowing the University to focus its efforts and its energy where it belongs: on the success of our students, the statement read.
McKelvey is scheduled to be officially sentenced on June 17, NJ.com reports.
Commenters online showed very little sympathy for the former students self-created situation.
Ha ha! 90 days in jail and $82,000 in restitution, commenter tellin it like it is posted. I hope that is a bitter pill for her to swallow.
ugh, every picture of her is smug and without remorse, she will be in the news again Im sure, corruptdna wrote.
90 days in the clink? NB posted. Thats it? Something something privilege.
Does the sentence include an apology to us rightwing hatemongers who were immediately blamed? Ralph Evans questioned. Didnt think so.
She did not learn anything. She says she went about it the wrong way.
And the m-f’s offered her a pussy deal to get out of it. Like they would do that for any white person in her spot.
God i hate this pc bs infecting the country.
That is her normal look. Vacuous.
Don’t have to lie. They are taught everything they dont like is racist/racism. Now there is so much not against them they are inventing microaggressions.
Will those $82k be prorated against her student loan? She was just following her professors’ lead after all.
In most of the pictures I’ve seen of her, she has a truculent and resentful look.
She is not an attractive individual.
Still not a valid reason to attempt incitement of violence.
Well it’s there now, number 214
Yes, I saw it after I posted. Didn’t make the immediate connection:

What's the "it" she's referring to--stirring up race hatred???
Seems to me THIS is a racially motivated incident. A black racist is motivated by her racial bigotry to defame people of other racial backgrounds.
Hatred and stupidity are a deadly combination ...
