UnitedHealth, the nation's biggest health insurer, will cut its participation in public health insurance exchanges to only a handful of states next year after expanding to nearly three dozen for this year.
CEO Stephen Hemsley said Tuesday that the company expects losses from its exchange business to total more than $1 billion for this year and last. He added that the company cannot continue to broadly serve the market created by the Affordable Care Act's coverage expansion due partly to the higher risk that comes with its customers.
UnitedHealth Group Inc. said it now expects to lose $650 million this year on its exchange business, up from its previous projection for $525 million. The insurer lost $475 million in 2015, a spokesman said.
UnitedHealth has already decided to pull out of Arkansas, Georgia and Michigan in 2017,

Marco, we barely knew ye.
My form says “Shared Responsibility Payment”
If my High deductible catastrophic care plan covered gender reassignment, abortion and prenatal care for older people that cannot have children, I would still have it.
I just brought my daughter for an obgyn vist and a follow up to get one of the BCP that helps control acne. No exam, a few questions and the RX. For both appointments my portion was $380. I almost had a heart attack.
I would have never agreed the the follow up had I known it was going to cost that much. Literally, the follow up was the doctor asking her how it was going and then giving the remainder of the RX (because she only gave 3 months worth at the first visit). It wasn't even five minutes.
Then I went to fill my sons' RX for skin cream. Normally, you get it for $35 with a drug company coupon. Now it was $115 with the coupon.
Ridiculous.
Is that true though? Maybe a small percentage of the very poor. But, even the highly subsidized still have the worthless high deductible plans, don’t they? Many of those people never had insurance because they didn’t think it a priority. I highly doubt they go now and pay cash until the deductible is met.
That is the only thing he will be remembered for. The obanacare death spiral.
The highly subsidized have a couple of options. They can go with a Bronze plan and pay next to nothing on Premiums. They still have to pay the high deductibles. Healthy people may take the risk and opt for the Bronze. The silver plan costs a bit more in premiums, but has lower copays and lower deductibles. It just depends on where their income fall on the 138% - 250% federal poverty level scale..
If Cruz gets the nomination, Rubio has a decent shot at Veep. I don’t think Kasich will work with Cruz, so Florida is also a must have state.
That also would put 2 Hispanics on the ticket, and that is an automatic demographic changer.
This is related to unintended consequences of obamacare but it is so entertaining. Dead beats actually get communist transfer payments from people who work. They call it something else but I call it “Unearned income tax credit” . Even illegal aliens !!! anyway ,very few buy heath insurance and wonderfully are hit with the insurance penalty which can only be collected from tax refunds!!! Of course, they have no refund so the tax is now taken out of their Unearned income tax credits!!!We save BILLIONS!! This makes me so happy!!
for one am not worried. It is goin to work out
The $15 minimum wage is coming!
I know of no way cruz gets the nomination unless he and the Gope steal it from Trump even though he has a massive lead in delegates and 3 million votes more that Cruz. I don’t think “little Marco’ want to work for Trump. Do you? I’m pretty confident Trump will take Governess Susanna Martinez from New Mexico as our new VP.
I forgot. Why not a thousand dollar per hour since we are spending other peoples money to get votes?
Thank you for that. It was certainly much simpler than trying to explain it again and I bet, a whole lot less stressful. You are probably sick and tired of repeating it. It does seem unbelievable but I know it is reality. I think a lot of families prefer to go without insurance and just pay the fine. They certainly would if your example was known to them.
I hope some of these horror stories have made it to the national news...possibly enlighten some folks. Wouldn’t that drive the establishment crazy if everyone said, “to **** with it. Come get your penalty.” OR IS THAT A TAX according to John Roberts? Whatever - you’re welcome to it!
That would leave only the “takers” having insurance...Who would they expect to pay the premium for them? HA! That’s a dumb question!
You youngsters (younger than my 80 years) have my sympathy....My husband and I retired at the age of 70 and we had the usual problems in our working years but I don’t think we faced what you folks are going to face. Certainly not what our grandchildren are going to be facing and that hurts!!
I hear you and I know it hurts when you’re faced with doctor and pharmacy bills like that. I just replied to red badger’s post and told him that I really feel for the younger generations. My husband and I didn’t retire until we were 70 and certainly faced obstacles in our working years and did a lot of griping about the government but nothing compared to what obamacare is doing to families. AND no one is answerable for the mess they created! We at least in our prime always had the hope that things WOULD GET BETTER....
At the beginning of our working years in the 1950’s, employees were covered with Major Medical insurance and not for every cough and sneeze that a person had. Who got the bright idea of expanding beyond Major Medical? We were self employed for the majority of our working years so we went without insurance because of the cost.
I wish you the best in working with this system...
Every time I see an article about the disaster and scam that is obamacare, I go to this....

Such an easy fix, to a manufactured crisis designed to line the pockets of the insurance companies, pharma companies and all the HMOs in between.
Very interesting. The gov’t will make it illegal.
