The national field director for Donald J. Trumps campaign who is a loyalist to Corey Lewandowski, the embattled campaign manager resigned in a letter to Mr. Trump on Monday afternoon.
I want to express my deepest gratitude for the opportunity to serve you and your campaign over the past 7 months, Stuart Jolly, the director, wrote in his resignation letter. The journey has been extraordinary and many experiences on this journey will never be forgotten.
Mr. Jolly, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, was especially loyal to Mr. Lewandowski, whom he had worked with previously at Americans For Prosperity, the free enterprise advocacy group associated with the billionaire brothers Charles G. and David H. Koch.
In the letter, Mr. Jolly stressed to Mr. Trump that his departure has nothing to do with you or Coreys staff, because I have never worked with a finer group of people. The letter, and a major staff meeting on Saturday, were reported by the website Politico.
The friendships I have made through your campaign will last a lifetime; my hope is that ours will as well, he wrote, calling Mr. Lewandowski one of my best friends and offering his availability in the future if you ever need me for any reason.
But the resignation was seen as a sign of distress among those loyal to Mr. Lewandowski about recent changes in the campaign that have curtailed his influence after a string of losses in states like Wisconsin and at state conventions to select delegates.
Mr. Jolly, whose first national campaign experience came this cycle under Mr. Trump and who was deployed to help the campaign in New Hampshire primary after a disappointing second-place finish in Iowa,

I’ll wait to see what others in the know say about the resignation. I’m not about to take the Times’ word for what it is ‘seen’ as.
He was “In Before The ‘You’re Fired!’ with his “I Quit!”
Agreed. I too am awaiting the rest of the story. Or maybe the real story.
The times ain’t exactly at the top of my list of trusted newspapers.
Haberman is a hysterical Trump hater. She was on CNN the night of the Chicago riot and the venom coming from her was unbelievable.
One guy leaving of his own volition is not a shake up. A lot of the Trump team are rookies - I expect they will be in hot demand by other politicians or lobby groups - etc. Trump’s victories are resume boosters for these rookies.
Wow, what a lie by the NYT. This is not the top campaign aide.
Campaigns move on to different phases. People come and go.
Especially when the times is quiet about the FOUR Secretaries of Defense Obama has had and three of them wrote scathing books on his leadership.
I notice the NYT is a new fave to Cruzbots. LOL
Given what has been revealed about Trump campaign team management of the ground game, seeing some folks falling on their swords is long overdue
He could have stayed and worked under new management to get Trump nominated but apparently hurt pride and ego were primary interests
Buh bye
So Cruz is doomed again? Is that the 80th time in the past year?
I doubt it was seen as a sign of distress by anyone other than the New York Times - - a group that works at picking a possible wounds IF it’s a Republican...
Consider the Source...
Just the once. Cruz is still doomed
“Mr. Jolly, whose first national campaign experience came this cycle ...”
Sounds like a “top” guy if he was overshadowed by his boss, Corey. Bring the luggage, top guy.
I Should have done this long ago- you can't even win delegates in a state I WON!
Trump is on the cusp of a major comeback in the northeast. Meanwhile, this retired Lt Col shows the backbone and grit that makes our military so great, loyalty!
It’s a campaign. There will be little frictions and power struggles and personality conflicts (and sometimes outside offers) that don’t necessarily have to do with the campaign at large. I consider this news small potatoes.
Cruz is still doomed. That has not changed. The only way Calgary Ted gets the nomination is if his GOPe masters give it to him.
Doesn’t say “The”.
