Almost a decade ago, Donald Trump promised to build the worlds greatest golf course, in Aberdeen, Scotland. The course, Trump International Golf Links, was opened in 2012, no thanks to some windmills and a rebellious farmer, but a Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel report that will air Tuesday night on HBO shows just how much Scotland came to despise Trump over the course of the ordeal.
Basically, Trump, in all his bluster, promised massive job creation and beautiful development and expansive investment and (from the Scottish perspective, at least) fell short on all fronts, making far more enemies than friends along the way.
The Real Sports clip features some brutal quotes from Al Salmond, the former First Minister of Scotland, including this exchange with reporter Bernie Goldberg:
Whats his image in Scotland today?
Oh, dreadful. Sub-zero. Donald couldnt get elected the dog-catcher.
That dog-catcher line is particularly funny since that is in fact one of Donalds go-to insults.
Salmond also says Trump didnt deliver or come anywhere near delivering on the promises he made and that Just about the last person I would want to see in the White House is Donald Trump.
Goldberg sums up Trumps interaction with the Scots like this:
After a decade of dealing with Trump, Salmond and a lot of other Scots say they made a mistake. That they were seduced by Trumps promises. That he talked big but didnt deliver. Not on the jobs he promised or the billions he said hed invest. And on top of that, he came to be known as a brash, loud-mouthed bully.
Is any of that shocking? Maybe not. But at least now we know with certainty that if Trumps campaign to be U.S. president falls flat, he will not be able to take refuge in Scotland.
If and when nominated.
Dang. Trump won’t be elected president in Scotland. Maybe Cruz should. Cruz is a globalist and may find success there. I’d send him money to get him out of our country. Would be worth every penny.
(((YAWN)))
Well, looks like he won’t be getting any delegates from Scotland.
The Scots are partly to blame for falling for his scam but ... it was his scam.
There are questions over the apparent lack of any due diligence assessment carried out on Donald Trump by Scottish ministers when considering his grand golf resort scheme, which could have revealed aspects of his business dealings that might have rung alarm bells.
A few weeks after Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond met Mr Trumps lawyer to discuss the proposals, news broke in the US about a former business associate of Mr Trump, Felix Sater an ex-convict who had gone to prison for stabbing a man in the face with the snapped-off stem of a cocktail glass, leaving him needing 110 stitches.
Out of prison, Mr Sater went on to take part in a $40m (£27m) stock market scam in the 1990s involving four mafia families. He gave evidence against his co-accused and pleaded guilty; in return the FBI kept his role secret.
Mr Sater then moved into property development, which is how he came into contact with Mr Trump.
Despite Mr Saters previous mafia links becoming public, Mr Trump remained involved with him in a property deal in Florida for another year.
Mr Saters LinkedIn webpage claims that he is a senior adviser to Donald Trump. The Trump Organisation says this is not true.
It was questions about Mr Sater which led to Mr Trump walking out of an interview with the BBCs Panorama team.
Shouldnt you have said: Felix Sater, youre connected with the mafia and youre fired? Mr Trump was asked.
In response, underlining that the link between himself and Mr Sater was merely a very simple licensing deal, he said: Maybe youre thick but when you have a signed contract, you cant in this country just break it
Sometimes well sign a deal and the partner isnt as good as wed like but that does happen, and by the way, I hate to do this but I do have
that big group of people waiting so I have leave
Mr Trump then walked out of the interview.
Donald Trump has great friends ... he’s just hired a guy with ties to the Russian mob.
In other words, Cruz is your candidate.
Yawn? It’s pertinent to the character of the man you want to be president.
Bryant Dumbell is a communist who got fired. I think it was because he was too obvious about it. :)
More, please, from your other snitty communist pals with a pen.
TRUMP has ALL the right enemies.
GO TRUMP! 2016
So the Euro-peeons that loved Obama hate Trump. Now, do I want to side with the Obama lovers or the Trump fans?
For all of Trump’so bluster about not being a politician, the Scot’so description fits almost all politicians..
Yes. If Trump is nominated though I’ll vote for him. What do you do if Cruz is nominated?
It’s all very well for trumpers to come on and laugh at Scotland and laugh at Donald Trump’s crooked dealings there, but this kind of thing has been generally ignored by the media here because they love Trump.
News flash, trumpers.
They love Hillary more and should Trump get the nomination, this kind of story will be everyday news. And there are a million of them.
Every time I see an article from some other country where the people worship Obonzo and hate Trump, I find it harder to not support Trump. I’m one of those old school “ugly Americans”. I really don’t shive a git what foreigners think.
Scots are socialists.
Scots may be socialists but Trump is still a crook.
Good thing he is not running for president of Scotland.
So Cruz is your candidate. Why didn’t you say that? It was a dead giveaway by posting this silly bit about Trump having trouble in Scotland. Er, who doesn’t? I can only imagine the holy hell that broke out when the American billionaire showed up. These are the people who think the Lockerbie bomber was an innocent prankster!
I’ll vote for the non-Democrat come this November. I hope it’s Trump but I’ll probably vote for Cruz if he’s the nominee. Anything to keep the witch out.
They don’t vote........
