IMHO - If we have an income tax and even one person is taxed then every one should have to pay some tax.
Even if it is only a few dollars out of their wages or government handout.
It’s like Big Choomer Obama said - everyone should have some skin in the game.
Even if it is only a few dollars worth of skin.
(although this isn’t what he meant)
The 45% who pay no taxes at all might think differently about government handouts and other spending if they knew some of it was coming out of their pockets.
From “This Week” on ABC, Jan 11, 2009:
BARACK OBAMA:
“What we have to do is to take a look at our structural deficit, how are we paying for government, what are we getting for it, and how do we make the system more efficient?”
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS:
“And eventually sacrifice from everyone.”
BARACK OBAMA:
“Everybody is going to have to give. Everybody is going to have to have some skin in the game.”
The problem is there are more taxes than just Federal income taxes deducted from a persons check.
Take 7.65% for FICA and then whatever State income taxes.
Then when you have a federal income tax refund, there is a disconnect. They don't understand there are 3 taxes paid.
In the end the bottom 45% feel they have paid their "fair" share.
A refund says "you paid too much in taxes". They don't differentiate between the 3.
I don’t pay taxes (S.S. and pension for income) and they don’t consider assets at all, which is just fine by me.
.
This is why a flat tax works. You would get money from everyone.
