The nominee becomes the titular head of the party and if elected as President has historically picked the party chariman.
GW Bush had Cheap Labor Express flunkies as chairmen.

The nominee becomes the titular head of the party and if elected as President has historically picked the party chariman. But not head of the RNC. That chairman is chosen by the committee members themselves. Priebus was re-elected to the spot last year and holds it until 2017, or longer if he gets re-elected again.

If Priebus loses his job, how will he be able to afford all of the makeup, hairstyling and dental work which keep him presentable on TV?

Even if he doesn’t have the actual power to do so. How could a GOP leader survive if the White House cuts him out of the loop and wont deal with him any further?
