Fifty years ago, more than a year after I had completed my active duty military obligation to this nation, I was allowed to register to vote. At the time I lived in NYC. We had a Rep. Gov. - Nelson Rockefeller, a Rep. Sen - Jacob K. Javits and a Rep. Mayor - John V. Lindsay. Is there any wonder why I registered as an independent voter?
Before that, in the late 50s, my parents were members (and my mother an officer) of the neighborhood Republican Club. The crap that went on there also influenced my decision. Mom was secretary/treasurer of the Club. The President wanted her to issue checks that she refused to sign off on. He told her to issue the checks or turn over the checkbook and seal. She handed them over and both she and Dad left the party.
PS, my father insisted before I registered, that I read “None Dare Call It Treason.”
