The interchangeability of one’s vote this election cycle between say Trump and Sanders supporters to me signifies a radical shift in from the left/right paradigm to a gimme gimme culture where the unitary party reigns supreme. God help us all.

It's not that bad. Bernie supporters are by nature Forest Gumps (In the real world rather than the movies, Forest would not have faired well). They have no idea how to help or ruin a country -> but they do know authenticity. So I welcome them.

But imagine how much it reflects they are just voting their hearts, that they are totally ignorant of anything that actually works or doesn't work.

"Hey! If I can't vote for the socialist, I'll vote for the capitalist." It's sad, in the sense that it's purely a popularity contest with them, and they don't know it, ... but it's encouraging that at least, given that it's a popularity contest, that it's authenticity that makes the candidate popular. Sure I'd rather have it be the candidate's ideas, philosophy and policy ... but realistically, these people are too dunderheaded or inexperienced to make a choice based on policy.

Here's another reason it's encouraging: It demonstrates that 40% of democrat voters don't really support socialism, they're just doing what's fashionable or makes them feel good. Better that they don't believe in it ... it suggests that Republicans/Conservatives aren't losing the war of ideas, but that they are losing because they are inauthentic, unpopular sell outs.

God helps those who help themselves, and we help ourselves helping the get the inauthentic cowards and cheats out of the Republican Party ... so ... I'm voting for Trump, and I welcome the Forest Gumps - Trump is not a 'gimme' candidate ... so that's not why they would switch to him.
