A startling video shows a 5-year-old boy getting paddled by his school principal in front of his mom.
Shana Marie Perez, who recorded the footage of her son's punishment, says she's had a long-running dispute with the school principal in Georgia. Her son has had 18 unexcused absences this school year and she was once arrested for his truancy.
She says the school threatened to call the police and have her arrested again if she did not give them permission to paddle Thomas.
She told IE: "I felt like I had no other option. The principal led me to believe that the paddle was the only option."
Perez said her son was "devastated about the whole situation."
"Every time I try to walk up to him he says 'don't hit me, don't hit me,'" she added.
The local sheriff says the school did nothing wrong because paddling is legal in Georgia as long as the parent gives their consent.
The disturbing video is re-igniting an old debate: is paddling really an effective way to punish a child this young?

Psychiatrist Dr. Gail Saltz told IE: "There is really no data to say that corporal punishment effects positive change."
She added: "When you take a kid that is already being oppositional and defiant, now you have taught him that another method of coping is to hit. Chances are you are going to get a child that is going to hit."
The school district says they are investigating the incident and their discipline policies
What the heck is wrong with you? This is a five year old child. All the reports I read stated he was in trouble for being disruptive (which is a hugely subjective term) and spitting on another child. That is not thug behavior.
Frankly if a teacher and principal cannot find an alternative means of discipline for such minor offenses I think they should not be dealing with younger children.
The principal should have paddled the idiot mother.
^^^^^^ This
You sir are an ass. I spanked my children. I have no problems with a loving parent spanking a child who has seriously misbehaved especially when that behavior could result in harm or caused harm to others. The paddling of this child is not the same thing at all.
During childhood I had no idea you could use a wooden spoon in cooking.
When I look back to my time as a high school student in New Zealand in 1984 and teachers there were allowed to cane students at the time, it may have been harsh and old fashioned compared to the United States and Canada by that time. However, I think that it kept us (boys in particular) that good deal more honest.
I had a technical drawing teacher who had been in the army years ago and was also a very nice, very personable fellow, but make no mistake, he did not take any $%^&ing nonsense from us and would flog students who made him sufficiently angry.
Oh, well that changes the story.
I too lay the blame at the feet of feminists.
Good for nothing loud mouth know it alls, who are being rejected by a large portion of the 20 something women that I know of, and their circles of friends.
My 93 year old Dad places the blame squarely on the sexual revolution - which in the end, is feminists yet again.
This isn’t address to you as I highly doubt you fail to discipline your children..
I know a cop who just smoked a 17 year old spoiled brat in an upscale neighborhood for pulling a gun on two cops. The little snowflake thought no one should ever tell him “no” and he was going to tell the cops “no”.
So, don’t discipline your kid, we’ll just shoot the little idiot later when gets out of control and threatens people with his temper tantrum violence and lack of self discipline.
That little spoiled brat whose “parent” is too lazy to discipline their child and lets him throw temper tantrums all his childhood turns into a monster adult who gets deadly about their temper tantrums. All those shootings at schools are by these dangerous spoiled brats.
Georgia Law is clear on this
http://www.ajc.com/news/news/local/student-truancy-can-spell-1000-fine-jail-for-paren/nQPb6/
...After five unexcused absences, a parent can be fined up to $100 and sentenced to 30 days in jail or community service, according to state law. The most severe cases are referred to Juvenile Court.
Why would anyone paddle when drugging the little snowflakes is so much better? /s
It is also very clear from Georgia law that mandatory age for compulsory attendance is 6.
It made a Marine out of you so quit whining
Every pussy can’t be a marine from what I’ve observed
I was raised by a disciplinarian and spanked with a belt...sometimes when I as a kid felt it uncalled for obviously
I sure never held it against him
My mom would slap if I talked back...she was typical passive aggressive southern belle but she was like most women...just fearful....they can’t help it...they can’t defend themselves as easy but now getting older I’m starting to understand that better since my fighting skills and heart are on the wane...fortunately I have a 140 Rott goes everywhere with me and my two oldest boys are quite game and growing
But at school they spanked first with ping pong paddle...the old sandpaper ones and delivered by women teachers who could pivot on a high heel...whap!
Later it was coaches....with a taped flexible recurve deer hunting bow halve called Oscar....it was legendary
Then a lady principle with a fraternity paddle...dolled up with pencil skirt and heels and boobs busting out and sweat beads above her lip....I was 13-14....she liked it...and hit real hard.....later she became local high school principal and was caught gang banging her football players...who were then white....and plying them with booze while her hubby was out of town...wearing dominatrix gear....I had moved to north Jackson by then...pity
Then on to Jackson Prep where licks with a frat paddle were delivered by my football coach the legendary Jack Carlisle who you can google...he lost a leg either in Korea or on a knucklehead in the early 50s but man could he swing that thing like Mantle or Reggie
My dad thought it was funny and well deserved...he got me for skipping class at 15....I never went to him again for that...learned my lesson
I loved my early life....there were consequences...people were more polite
spare the child ... paddle the mom
No the principal did not state the facts. Those absences should have been excused as they were for doctor appointments. That many visits does suggest an ongoing medical problem which I imagine adds stress to both the boy and his mom’s life. But that is just speculation on my part.
The one report I read stated he tried to hit another boy (which was the only report I saw that mentioned) then spit at somebody and they (I guess that means some teachers) had to chase him around the school lot. So this did not happen in the class room but I guess on what is used for recess time or waiting for the bell to ring before school time.
Taken in context honestly it comes across as a couple of boys getting into a scuffle then one deciding to show his ass to the teacher. The misbehavior warranted the boy being disciplined, even a spanking by mom when he got home, but not a paddling done only because the mother was told a lie to get her to consent.
Didn't know that, thanks for the correction
Did the principal say on camera she would be arrested if she did’t let the kid get spanked, or do we just have this woman’s word on that?
Freegards
Then the little brat would wind up in the care of the CPS.
Mommy can't "care" for him in jail, so it's off to the institution for him.
Good call.
She’s a lousy-assed mother, but five is too young to paddle.
“when we meet a yessir kid we want to meet the parents because they are obviously the rare fellow traveler and Im in the south albeit an invaded part”
I’ve bought dinner at restaurants more than once after seeing the children well behaved and the parents parenting. It is so rare that I feel compelled to reward the parents.
I also notice the disciplined families are happy families. The children have what they want but they have to be polite and ask properly and behave. The parent give instructions and guidance and teach their children how to behave in public.
The lie was that she could receive jail time if the boy was suspended instead of taking the paddling. Also as some have posted the age of compulsory education in Georgia begins at age six. So how could he be truant. A suspension is not an unexcused absence. Now in some reports it reads she was told and others state she thought it was implied. So the story does change depending on who is reporting it.
Now if this child is a constant problem and has been disrupted before it is suggestive that he needs to be evaluated for whether he should be placed in ESE and given an IED.
